what yall think?

Hey Gang,

Got an offer very resonably for this mare (stormy lassy). As a broodmare prospect. I know nothing about smoke glacken, and I did try to speak with the folks at Gainesway about her, but haven't heard back from them yet.

I'm in central Texas, she's in Ohio, but that's not my real question. She looks decent, but I don't know what kind of BM sire Two Punch made, and don't know if she's worth messing with even if for free.

My price range is 5K and under, and only Tx standing stallions.

I thought maybe Gold Legend would be good. Possibly Zap also.

Tell me what you guys think.

Smoke Glacken was champion sprinter and has been a good sire (he stands for $25,000). He's not old enough to have a lot of producing daughters out there so it's too early to say definitively what kind of a broodmare sire he'll be. His sire Two Punch has been a good broodmare sire though.

I wouldn't expect Gainesway to be able to tell you anything about the filly in question (Stormy Lassy). They stand her sire but otherwise have never had anything to do with her.

Stormy Lassy wasn't a good runner. She earned around $6,000 running 17 times over two seasons and never won. She did get one second and two thirds though.

As a short yearling Stormy Lassy sold for $22,000 at OBS January which is below average for a Smoke Glacken but that still wasn't a scary low price or anything.

One big thing working against this filly Stormy Lassy as a broodmare prospect is that she's the only foal out of her dam, the winning Green Dancer mare Irish Green. So any foal out of Stormy Lassy is going to have no black type in the first two dams and there's no chance of that changing unless Stormy Lassy herself produced a stakes horse one day. Even though people will like that she's by Smoke Glacken, the first two dams of her foals being "blank" will keep her from being commercial. The second dam of Stormy Lassy is a stakes winner, Allegedum by Alleged, who has some stakes horses under her including a champion grass horse in Canada (Numerous Times) so it's a decent family further back.

Stormy Lassy has a very grass oriented pedigree.

If she were free, and a good looker as you say, and you were interested in racing her foals she might be a good get. She's unlucky that she's the only foal out of her dam because it's a nice family further back. Being a non-winner despite numerous tries doesn't help her out either.

Thanks for the information you shared.

I will get to see the filly on 8/11 while home visiting my mother.

I thought about her grass wise as well, and that' s her appeal to me.

She has broken down now, she's got a cracked sesamoid. That leads me to think she's put together poorly.

I'm not overly interested, I have 4 mares now, and will be picking up 1 more this fall. I think she's interesting only because I don't have but 1 other Mr. P line mare, and the one that I have is a Gone West. I'm a big fan of Storm Cat, and that's what I have the most of and 1 other ND line mare. The one I'm getting this fall is another Storm Cat mare as well.

I'm very partial to turf pedigree, so I gave some thought to her based on the Najinski bottom.

I will think about it and look at her in a few weeks, and make my mind up from there. With the market in TX being where it is right now, I don't know for sure whether to stay or go anyway. Unless you sell them privately, you have little or no shot making any money off of the foals, and I'm not able to race but so many.

Again,
Thanks for sharing!

It is true that the black type might be a bit thin, but look at the dam's siblings.... they're major stakes producers. One half sister is the dam of a nice champion (grass, what a shock!) and another 1/2 sis has more black type too. Immediate family of Dumdedumdedum and Nepal.
