Need sire suggestions

Postby Northlight » Wed Jan 19, 2005 4:33 pm

can you give a newbie some advice on possible pairings for these three gals?

Flaming Cloud (1997)
Dancing Moon (1998)
Slew Plate Special (1998) - in foal to Untuttable for '05

hoping for durable stayers - a bit old fashioned, I know. Anything point to turf in these mares? Like to keep the fee at $5,000 or less. We're in Georgia, so Florida or KY would work.

I have only looked at Flaming Cloud so far, but seeing that her dam is a full sister to Rexson's Hope makes me think immediately of the Halo sire line for her since a similar cross produced G1 winner Hal's Hope.

Sweetsouthernsaint ($2500, Ocala Stud) has shown some promise as a freshman sire of 2004 and makes a nice match on paper with the mare. To my eyes, he is a rather coarse animal and seemed heavy on the forehand when he moved, but your mare and her family were pretty tough by modern standards; the match may be suitable if the mare is a little more refined without lacking adequate bone. This would probably be the most commercially viable matchup if you needed to sell the foal.

Scottish Halo (no fee listed, Jubilee Farm) is a G3-winning son of Jolie's Halo (sire of Hal's Hope) and was at either $2500 or $3000 last year (can't remember exactly). Nice pedigree matchip with linebreeding to the important mare Almahmoud. I have never seen this horse so I don't know anything about his conformation, but if you can you'll probably want to view the potential mates for your mares and assess them yourself before booking.

Holy Mountain is a G3-winning turf stayer by Devil's Bag. He also makes a nice pedigree match with the mare but has done very little at stud so far. He stands at Emerald Pastures Farm with no fee listed, but I can't imagine that he commands all that high a fee. He was sound enough to last 31 starts.

P.S. Flaming Cloud was pretty strictly a sprinter, so you'd probably be looking at 8-9 furlongs as about the limit for the first two matings. Holy Mountain might get you a bit further or might not.

I'm not sure how Rocking Trick will do siring stayers; but Dancing Moon's 5x6x6 to Bull Lea (Rocking Trick's 5x7 to him and both his dam [see Randy Cat] and his damsire [see the Storm Cat/Nijinsky, Storm Cat/Roberto, and Storm Cat/Alydar nicks] like returns of Bull Lea), 6x6x6x7x7x7 to Blenheim (Rocking Trick's 2nd dam La Vire was 5x5x5x5 to his sire Blandford with three of the crosses coming through daughters), and 5x5 to Khaled (the damsire of Icecapade's best son Wild Again, Khaled is also found on the damline of Phone Trick's best daughter Phone Chatter)

All these linebreeding patterns found in the mare are positives with RT. And also note Alydar has combined with Rocking Trick's Vale female family in the GI Producer Vanishing Prairie and the GIW Vallee Enchantee.

thank, and a question

this is very helpful.

Holy Mountain is very interesting - I like the way Swaps comes in through the powerful female line of Devil's Bag. What would you think about Holy Mountain with Dancing Moon, who brings her Swaps through No Robbery?

If Bill from Washington is out there - can you give me a "conduit mare" evaluation of these three?

For Slew Plate Special I would highly recommend Hap. I know you can get a breeding through some of the state stallion auctions for him - he stands for $5k. Hap won 10-of-20 starts and $1,329,210, posting 10 Triple Digit Beyers in his last 13 starts and won 6 graded stakes.
Hap is out of three-time champion sprinter and twice champion older mare, Committed. His first foals are yearlings of 2005. His sales results have not been very good, but if you are breeding to race I think you can't miss.

Congrats on getting this mare,Robin was very attached to her, and tries very hard to do right by the horses she cares for. We were interested in her, but ended up with a stout little mare named You Can Too who Robin felt was at risk for being sent to a kill sale. "Tootie" is now learning to rope with my 13 year old son, and she loves it.
