Opinions: speed to speed

Postby doublete » Fri May 01, 2009 8:54 pm

My new filly is a definite speed ball, undefeated at 4 1/2 furlongs. (3 for 3)- 12 wins total.

I have one option to breed to another speed ball, who has a track record at 4 1/2. So my question is- is that something that is a good idea or a bad idea?

Take out the conformation and other considerations. Just straight would you breed a speed specialist to a speed specialist? Does this or does this not work?

Oh, breeding to race. And probably in that case foaling in WV to run those lucrative 4 1/2 races at Charles Town.

Please give us a little more info. Name of mare and possible stallion would be appreciated.

Take a look at Stored.

his momma won the Breeder's Cup G-1 sprint and a bunch of G3 regional breeders cup races and was an Eclipse champion sprinter with $2.2 million in winnings.

Stored's top side is also good.

Stored Kisses beat my gelding and every body else badly in his MSW win; i.e, Stored is throwing speed.

I don't mind breeding speed to speed, but since both your potential sire and dam did their best running at 4 and 1/2 furlongs I think you probably do need to add a little more ability to carry that speed into the mix.

Otherwise you might find yourself with a very speedy 3 furlong specialist.

I didn't want mare and stallion names to be considered, just the speed to speed ratio.

LB that is what I afraid of.

The mare won 3 of 3 at 4 1/2, but ran the rest of her 9 other wins at 5 1/2 to 7 furlongs. So the vast majority were won at a greater distance. The stallion holds a record at 4 1/2 but also won at a bit better distance. Can't find the race record right now- but I think he won at 6 furlongs as well.

Well all right then, that sounds a bit better. In that case I think you might be fine, especially since you're looking to produce a horse that excels at 4 and 1/2 f.

I would definitely try to breed to speed for the mare - rather than try to introduce something into the pedigree that isn't consistent with the mare.
