Strange breeding year ...

Postby mikec » Thu Jul 23, 2009 8:08 am

Took longer than usual but got 'em all settled finally. Bali Hai in foal to Holy Bull ( Jan. 2010 foal ), Carly Pooh in foal to Out of Place ( May 2010 ), Beach Barbicue to Holy Bull ( May 2010 ) and Tuleyries ... could not get her in foal to Belong To Me to save our lives. Finally got out of the contract, brought her home to Pa., and received a complimentary breeding to Activist ... pregnant on first shot ( May 2010 ). Three of those girls get a well deserved vacation next year. What a wacky year !!

It was a somewhat odd year for us too; mares foaling later than expected, then taking more time than usual to come back in season. We ended up with: Shriek in foal to Hard Spun (2/10), Tricky Bird in foal to Street Boss (2/10), Hot Weekend in foal to FuPeg (3/10), History in foal to Sky Mesa (3/10), Timeless Forest in foal to Grand Slam (4/10) and our last mare, who lost a foal in Feb. never settled at all.

I thought it was weird too, not that I have been doing this all that long. My oldie mare, who just loves to be pregnant, took once again on her foal heat. Then her 6 wk old foal died, and I worried that her old genes contributed to his death. Then she slipped at 30 days, and we had her all checked out and the vet said foal's death was not due to old mares age, so onward to a second cover and she once again is pregnant, and happily so in her 3rd month.
The 2nd mare, who had been an easy keeper, all of a sudden became a nervous mare in the pasture and had to be separated because she was losing weight (manager thought she didn't like her pasture mates). She never caught at all so we had to switch stallions (first was having fertility issues), she then caught right away but still had to keep her separated to put a little weight back on her. When she came back home she was still thin but has progressed and is still happily pregnant at 3 mos.
Third mare apparently doesn't like males. Hates all teasers and not happy with the stallion either. Third time I've been made aware of this fact from third stallion manager. First 2 managers were polite, this one was a crusty old guy who filled his report with several expletives. He made me laugh and they got her bred.
All 3 of them were at least 2 weeks overdue, and I will probably give the last mare (the stallion hater) a year off to re-set her since she will be foaling late next season.
I think the strange weirdness is probably the norm. Certainly seems to be from my perspective. It's really what I've wanted to do forever and my 2 year old is getting near to being ready to go to her trainer at the track. I can hardly wait, it's the end game.

I have a mare infoal to Any Given Saturday after foaling a nice Offlee Wild colt at the end of May. She'll get next year off, but her daughter will be heading to the shed in 010.

The cycles were unusual this year. Throughout Kentucky, pregnancies were going long and it was taking longer for mares to cycle. Hopefully that won't be a future trend, because its going to make me lose a year with my mare, of course as her daughter was earning blacktype. Great timing.

Well ; I suppose it is some solace to know I'm not the only one who just felt like it was an odd year.

Do you think that perhaps the weather over the eastern part of the US might have influenced the breeding cycles? I'm trying to remember what the weather was like in the Ohio valley earlier in the year, and I think that "unsettled" might be a good description. Didn't Kentucky enter 2009 in a drought, and wasn't it eventually ended, meaning that KY got lots of rain.

LB - Do I remember correctly that Tricky Bird was bred to Carson City a few years ago? For some reason I remember looking at a filly (Keeneland 07?) o/o Tricky Bird and liking her..

You have a good memory. :)

That filly was named Wicked Delight; she raced in CA was placed at 3 but hasn't broken her maiden. Tricky Bird's current yearling is a colt by Broken Vow; and her 2 year old, a Maria's Mon colt named Turf Melody, ran 3rd in the Spectacular Bid Stakes at Arlington on Saturday.
