Opinions wanted :)

Postby camar711 » Sat Sep 11, 2010 2:07 pm

New here wanted some opinions on a mare I just picked up. This will be my first breeding and want to make sure I make as good a decision as possible. I live in FL and for my first breeding would prefer to stay with a Florida stallion. Not opposed to going to KY if it's the "perfect" match (not that there's any such thing). My goals are to breed to race. I've looked over all the stallions in FL and without actually seeing them in person, I'm kind of hooked on Congrats for now. Not sure what his stud fee will be next year but I'm hoping it doesn't go up TOO much ;) What do you all think?

Here's the mare...

She didn't do too much on the track. Didn't place in maiden race, 3rd in second race and won 3rd race on turf and then nothing after that but they discovered a prior knee injury (non track related, fence related so I am told) was reinjured and had to retire her. Not a big mare...15.3 hh.

Did you look at Hear no Evil and Unbridled Time, that breeding with Congrats gives a hell of a lot of inbreeding.

Thank you Dublino. Correct me if I'm wrong but it doesn't appear that Unbridled Time has done much in the breeding shed. Hear No Evil looks more promising. My only concern with him is he looks a little refined in the picture and I'd like to see something that offers a bit "more". However, I have never seen him in person so that's not saying much. Trying to balance a good stallion with pedigree and conformation is not the easiest task. If I had my pick of any stallion, it would be Candy Ride, but that is out of the question at this point in time. On Congrats, the breeding is similiar on inbreeding to Wickedly Perfect and I know Pulpit has crossed well with Storm Cats. That was were my thinking was coming from. Plus he seems to be doing well in the shed and he's a good sized boy. I'm in the beginning stages of searching so all opinions are appreciated :)

Ok...so what's up with Pedigree Query? I was doing some hypotheticals and noticed my mares dam went from a multiple stakes winner of $225k to non stake winner of only $10k? Can just anyone update these? I know she truely is a multiple stakes winner so I dunno if it's a glitch or someone is messing with the pedigrees? :?

This is an open-edit database, all its info is contributed by users.

The mare's record is correct as of now - if it continues to be monkeyed with, I can lock it so that only research group members will be able to edit it.

I could see Congrats going back up to 10-12.5 range for next year, I could also see him moving to Ky. Montbrook, Graeme Hall, Put it Back?
Maybe a new stallion will move down for 2011.

Congrats will stay in Florida. His owner just moved 30 mares down there.

If I were breeding to race, I couldn't pass up sending her to Louisiana to K One King. You have a unique opportunity to try a Rasmussen Factor to Moccasin. She had 7 stakes winners from 8 foals!

Thank you drsamurai. Can you tell me where I might be able to find a picture atleast of K One King? Did a google search but all I came up with was a muddy head shot of him after he won a race...not the most flattering.

Nevermind...I found him :)

the mare appears to be highly inbred. I would definitely look for a stallion that was an outcross candidate. There are some turf types in the His Majesty line that might work if the typology was right.
Run the race - the one that's really worth winning.

I vote for either Montbrook or his son Chapel Royal

Thank you for all the suggestions. Curious if anyone has any thoughts (negative or positive) to Kiss the Kid, who's standing first year at Journeyman for 2011. The cross with my mare happens to get an A+ and I like that he raced until 7. No conformation photo yet, so unclear how he looks physically as I've never seen him in person.

whichever stallion you choose Id pay more attention to inbreeding % and less on nick rating
