QH person looking for advice

Postby boots218 » Fri Mar 04, 2005 10:40 pm

We are starting to raise some quarter horses for racing. I would like to find one or two nice TB mares to cross with QH stallions. I am unfamiliar with the TB sprinting bloodlines and would like advice as to which lines to look for in my mares. Which female families seem to prevail with individual with great speed that can't go the TB distance. These individuals need to be early maturing with good strong bone and good legs. TB stallions that have done very well on QH mares are Beduino, Hempen, Zevi, Azure Te, Reb's Policy, just to name a few. I am just beginning my research of TB bloodlines, but would appreciate input from the experienced TB breeders. Thanks in advance. :D

The TB mare CHERRY LAKE produced five QH stakes winners, including several champions, as I recall. There is still some of her blood available in TBs, particularly in California.

FYI, Dash for Cash and Secretariat both trace to the same TB female family.

You might try posting this also on the All Breed forum if you haven't done that yet.

Do watch the Zevi's. My dad bred several mares to him in the early '80's and owned several mares by him and they tend to have nasty temperments. Really the ones you have listed are the ones you should be looking at. Basically the old tradition for finding TB mares to breed to QH had been to watch the track near you and look at filly and mare races for horses that are running fast 1/4 and 1/2 fractions and stopping.
