Graustark

Postby Jean » Tue Mar 22, 2005 6:25 am

Are the any examples of successful in-breeding or line breeding to Graustark or would that be concentrating Ribot too much to get a reliable tempermant?

Don't forget His Majesty, Graustark's full brother. Other members of the family and their temperaments should also be taken into consideration.

Gentleman (ARG, 1992 Robin des Pins - Elegant Glance by Loose Cannon; 4s x 4D to Graustark via Key to the Mint & Java Moon) was very successful on the track, but I don't know anything about him, temperament-wise. See Walmac's website for stats as a sire.

First off, inbreeding to Graustark's sire Ribot is profoundly successful and He can be accounted among the handful of stallions in the 20th Century that make prime inbreeding targets.

Monarchos and Funny Cide are just two of so many Multiple GI Winners who linebreed to Ribot (and in the case of these two, the inbreeding comes through Graustark on the female side in the same position).

(Inbreeding to Ribot is especially good for adding some stamina and stoutness to a pedigee.)

On to Gruastark, the pattern of inbreeding to him has actually worked quite nicely in not just Gentlemen, but also in the San Juan Capistano (GI) Winner Sunshine Street and the Tokyo Derby (GI) Winner Tanino Gimlet. There's also a G3W named John Little, who won the Excelsier BC Handicap at 9f.

Mark well that Gentlemen won the Grand Premio Nacional at 2500 Meters and the Hollywood Gold Cup/Pacific Classic at 10f, Sunshine Street won the San Juan Capistrano at 14f, and Tanino Gimlet won the Tokyo Derby at 2,400 Meters.

And even the G3W won his G3 at 1 1/8 Mile.

p.s.

Oddly, Graustark inbreeding seems like it's doing better when he comes through daughters (and in Timino Gimlet and Sunshine Street he even comes through TWO daughters).

Mark down Roberto and Golden Trial (or the combination thereof) as possible catalysts in this style of inbreeding.

Brian's Time and Sunshine Forever both getting GIWs from mares with a female return of Graustark, hmm.

BEHRENS won a mere $4,563,500 across the world and is line bred 3 x 5 Ribot (and 4 x 5 Double Jay).

Gentlemen is a hellraiser--but I don't know that went back to Graustark.

If you are looking for inbreeding to Graustark, don't forget his dam's influence. Flower Bowl is not only dam of Graustark and His Majesty, but also the dam of Whiskey Road, sire of Strawberry Road. Ribot and Flower Bowl's dam Flower Bed combine in the dam of Take Me Out. Ribot himself is broodmare sire of Majestic Light. Lots of permutations to work with.

Ouch. Sounds like his name may be nearly as misleading as that of Halo, who certainly didn't wear one.

I just saw Gentlemen this week at Walmac. It was pouring ran and he was still out in the paddock. They told me he won't come in unless he has a mare to breed or its time to eat once he's turned out. He was a beautiful animal though.

There is a stallion here in Washington named Bay Runner who is 3x3 to Graustark. He was a very fast stakes winning sprinter, setting track records for 5 furlongs (56.2), and 6 furlongs (1.07.4). G1 SW (Japan) Tenino Gimlet is 3x4 to Graustark.
