satan's valentine
i know nothing about breeding but we did get a beautiful foal by civilisation by this mare. unfortunately, we lost the baby after a couple of months. now i'm wondering if we should try again, we're breeding to race. any thoughts?

I WOULD BREED THIS MARE IN A NANOSECOND! YOU HAVE SOME GREAT THINGS GOING FOR YOU IN THIS MARE. I LOVE THE FEMALE SIDE OF THIS MARE TOP AND BOTTOM. HAS THE "X" FACTOR TOP AND BOTTOM; GVS=64.73; DI=3.57; CD=0.84; PRINCE JOHN, SPEAK JOHN, ETC.
IF YOU WOULD EVER WANT TO FOAL SHARE OR SELL THE MARE, I WOULD BE INTERESTED!

I don't know your area or your budget, but the one name that leapt right out to me for SV is, of all horses, Broad Brush.
Aside from carrying a strain of Turn-To, which Broad Brush loves, she also carries *The Squaw. MG2W/G1P Quest Star, SW Shashobegon and SW/G2SP One Bold Stroke carry a strain of *The Squaw via Chieftain. SWs Brush with the Law and Noisette are linebred to Tom Rolfe, whose damline traces back to *The Squaw.
Unfortunately, Broad Brush is pensioned and to this point, none of his sons have distinguished themselves as sires (and were he still standing, there is a good choice he'd be WAY out of your budget). Which leads me to my next recommendation:
Slew City Slew. Your mare would be bred along the same idea as Evansville Slew, and even aside from pedigrees one absolutely cannot go wrong with this horse. He can get a runner from any mare you throw at him, and frequently will get you a very good runner. Any way you slice it, this guy is a breed-to-race owner's dream.

Best of Luck has not gotten off to a torrid start as a stallion. I do expect this to change: he is bred for late and long, and his oldest foal crop are three-year-olds. 20dourmdd, I don't disagree that he is an option, but I would wait 2-3 more years and see if his foals start winning more often and start winning higher class races before sending him a mare.
For $500 more than the young, unproven Best of Luck, you can have the quality, proven Slew City Slew. I don't know what state you are in--but if your statebred program includes a "breed-back" option, you can send her to SCS, foal her out at home, and breed her back to a local stallion and both foals will be registered statebreds.
Either way, good luck!
