What would these two breedings get me??

Postby Stephanie Smith » Sun Nov 13, 2005 4:49 am

I am planning on breeding my two new mares in '06 to my stud, what do you all think that I am going to get?

Lady Navigator -----> Screen Trick Lady navigator won more than $100,000. 15.3hh Medium build mare.

Ascot Queen -----> Screen Trick Ascot Queen never raced but has produced winners. She has a lot of substance to her, I am sure I will get 16.2hh as he is 16.1hh and she is 16.3hh easy!

I am new at racing, and was thinking that if other people thought the mares were as nice as their old owners thought they were then- I should try for racing! I am happy with sport horse offspring- as that is what I originally wanted! I can give you more information on ladys winnings- have to calculate!

I just really want to know what you guys think! I know Screen Trick didnt do so hot on the track but he has potential for his offspring! If these mares were to be bred by other stallions, who would cross well with them for racing? What do you guys think about the mares in general as far as pedigree and such? What do you think of Screen Trick?

Thanks everyone!!!!!

Lady Navigator has an interesting pedigree.. and a reasonably good family. Her dam produced Wild Navigator, but more importantly Meadow Sunrise, by Time for a Change, and I would definitely look for a Damascus line stallion for her... if looking at home at least the son, P F First Trick brings in Hail To Reason, etc.

Regarding Ascot Queen, in VA I like Mighty Forum for her.

Hi Stephanie,

Just a few general comments. Of the two mares, I think Ascot Queen has by far a better chance of producing a racehorse based on her female family. (Take this with a grain of salt however, since I am basing this strictly off this site's database and the female family records for both mares may be far from complete). However, her female family seems to show a pattern of more success when bred to Raise A Native line stallions, especially through Mr. Prospector.

The database does not reflect Lady Navigator's winnings. Although $100,000 is a respectable sum, much depends on how many races and at what level she ran while achieving these earnings. $100,000 earned in one season, and $100,000 earned over the course of 5-6 years of racing has entirely different meaning. The database also doesn't show that her female family has produced much of anything on the track in three generations dispite having some pretty decent BSs (Silent Screen, champion 2YO colt; Intentionally, champion US Sprinter; Chamossaire, champion English and Irish sire). If her female family's produce is incomplete on the database, she may have a much better shot at producing a runner, but I'd definately point her foals toward a sporthorse career based on what I see.

Hope this is helpful.

The female family is much more productive than this database reflects on Lady Navigator... Meadow Sunrise (half sister by Time for a Change) won over $123K and Wild Navigator (by Wild Zone) was G3 placed...I don't have the time to update these female families and my apr is '03..

I too like Ascot Queen as a broodmare. As you mentioned in your post, she already is a producer?

Don't see much in her first two dams, but Taken Aback,(She won the 1970 running of the Overbrook Spinster!) was nice filly and good producer.
Stalwart Charger, (Winner of the 1990 Sliver Screen) Ascot Queen and Stalwart Charger have as a second dam Charge Back, who was a daughter of Taken Aback.

If you go back to Ascot Queens 5th dam, Evening Belle, you will find several graded stakes winners that trace female family to Evening Belle.
Rajas Delight, (1980 Del Mar Debutante) has Evening Belle as a 3rd dam

Evening Belle is the dam of Belle De Nuit who won the 1966
Test Stakes. Belle De Nuit is the Dam of Dame Mysterieuse who won the 1981 Bonnie Miss.

Mrs. Cornwallis who won the 1971 Darley Alcibiades and Overskate who won the 1979 Bowling Green Hcp and 1979 Bernard Baruch Hcp have Evening Out, (Daughter of Evening Bell) as their 2nd dam.

Lastly, There is Waltz Fan, who won the 1973 Test Stakes. Her 2nd Dam is Evening Belle.

I'm not clever enough to make any recommendations on Stallions. I just like researching female families. I suggest you look up the pedigrees of the horses mentioned and see what sire lines these stakes winners were bred on.

As a final note, I think there has been some discussion on this forum about sons of Phone Trick. To Wit; Their lack of success at stud.
