Stallion selection for Falcon's Eye

Postby Douglas Brown » Fri Mar 10, 2006 4:08 pm

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It is crunch time! My mare, Falcon's Eye by Mutakddim out of Twosome by One for All, will most likely be ready to head to the breeding shed early next week. That is the good news. The bad news is that I have still not decided on where to send her although I have narrowed the selection down to Go For Gin or Polish Miner.

By my method of evaluating, it is a draw. Would anyone care to offer an opinion?

Thanks,

Go For Gin

Postby hpkingjr » Fri Mar 10, 2006 5:28 pm

My vote is for Go For Gin. Very interesting article reprinted (without permission) by Peter Hohlweg detailing a super star nick for Hyperion and Teddy. Go For Gin gives better than a 6x6 on both plus five lines of La T.

Additionally although there are about 50 or so inbred Graded stakes winners inbred to Mr. P, the expected number is 4 times greater than the real number (1/4 of the expected numbers based on opportunity). This is based on the Ventura Geoscore from one of the postling members here. (libean) Very COOL tool. His info is from the Gr 1 Goldmine software. Good luck on your choice.

There seems to be a relationship between Teddy and Hyperion creating superstars like Peintre Celebre, Dubai Millennium, Sinndar, Galileo and Point Given. These horses share a heavy and simulaneous linebreeding to Teddy (1913) and Hyperion (1930) in the first nine generations.

My approach was quite simple. I used Del Mar Pedigree Query for searching 9-generation linebreedings-reports of top-class racehorses. I checked the statistics for Teddy and Hyperion and excluded all with an inbreeding coefficient of less than 1% and more than 2%. I chose these because they are equivalents for linebreedings of about 5 x 6 (for 1%) generations respectivly 4 x 5 (for 2%). So I got only heavy linebreedings and excluded inbreedings. For example, Dubai Millennium has for Hyperion an coefficient of 1.56% because Hyperion appears in his pedigree 6 x 5 x 6, that means a calculated influence of 5 x 5. Teddy has an coefficient of 1.90% and appears 6 x 9 x 7 x 7 x 7 x 7 x 8 x 9 x 8 x 7 x 9 x 7. This linebreeding to Teddy corresponds to an influence of about 5 x 5 (tent to 4 x 5).

Hyperion Teddy
Dubai Millennium 1.56% 1.20%
Galileo 1.56% 1.17%
Peintre Celebre 1.76% 1.17%
Point Given 1.07% 1.22%
Sinndar 1.12% 1.22%

I think that is a remarkable pack.

Such a heavy cross of Teddy and Hyperion is not so usual as you may expect. Of course a lot of good racehorses are linebred to Teddy or to Hyperion, but only a few have a linebreeding to both simultaneously.

Take a random sample by scanning e.g. the horses of an allowance race at your local race track, or the hopefuls of the next Kentucky Derby 2002 or analyze horses you just remember. You will hardly any horses find who fulfill the conditions.

But of course there are a few with this type of linebreeding :

Fall Aspen, who is Dubai Millennium's granddam, is a potent source of Hyperion. She also has some strains of Teddy. Among her descendants you will find Hamas, Fort Wood and Timber Counrty, also Mehthaaf and Elnadim. They all are linebred to Hyperion / Teddy.

Galileo is by Sadlers Wells, who has also an inbreeding to Hyperion. Strains of Teddy passed from Miswaki to Galileo. Miswaki is like Seeking The Gold by Mr Prospector out of a Buckpasser mare. Therefore Dubai Millennium and Galileo are very similar, but reverse bred. Also linebred to Hyperion / Teddy are Sadlers Wells sons Carnegie, Poliglote and King of Kings. Anabaa Blue, who is a close relative to Galileo, is by Danzig's son Anabaa.

Peintre Celebre is differently bred. He is by Nureyev out of a daughter by Alydar. His second dam is by Habitat. Nureyev is like Sadlers Wells a source of Hyperion. Look at Wolfhound, Spinning World and Loup Sauvage.

Point Given is by Thunder Gulch out of Turko's Turn, who is by Alydar's son Turkoman. Gulch has a lot of Teddy. His progeny Eagle Cafe, Harayir, Great Navigator and Nayef got strains of Hyperion from the damside. Gulch's son Thunder Gulch is also linebred to Hyperion / Teddy and also his progeny Point Given and Tempest Morn.

Sinndar is by Grand Lodge, who is also linebred to Hyperion / Teddy. At Sinndar's sireside appears Habitat, and at the damside he has Owen Tudor (1938). Besides Citation (1945) and Belle Sicambre (1961),

Owen Tudor is the best example of a early crossing of Hyperion and Teddy. Hopefuls for 2002 with this type of linebreeding are Imperial Gesture und Admire Don.

A Selection of sources of Hyperion
Tony Bin 4.69%, Sharpen Up 3.91%, Nureyev 3.13%, Sadlers Wells 2.34%, Selkirk 2.34%, Lashkari 2.34%, Danzig 1.95%

A Selection of sources of Teddy
Buckpasser 3.13%, Nijinsky 3.13%, Mr.Prospector 2.54%, Alydar 2.54%, Riverman 2.54%, Gulch 2.44%, Miswaki 2.25%, Woodman 2.34%, Gone West 1.95%, Habitat 1.95%

I would greatly stress that the linebreeding to Hyperion / Teddy is just one aspect in the pedigree of the above mentioned horses. Dubai Millennium, Peintre Celebre and the other ones are more than this type of linebreeding.

So be careful with this hypothesis and attack it. Never forget, that there are a lot of top-class horses lacking this cross e.g. Cigar, Montjeu or Tiznow.

This article will be continued in a second part.

Go for Gin MR P nick is A+ +1167.
Polish Miner is B+ +146
I have a mare at northview right now and they have been great to work with, Linda Bench specifically. I would love to say Polish Miner for that reason alone, but between these two I would Go For Gin.

The mare I have is a MR P also and I have just hitched up with Crowd Pleaser. nick to your mare was A++ +3748 highest rating I've ever pulled from werk. Werk only looks at sire lines, but I think its a good pick without their confirmation. I apologize, I swore I wouldn't give you another opinion and then I did. I envision my mare will go to Go For Gin someday herself.

Good Luck

Pat,

The two foals we are about to breed will be 4.30% (6x6) linebred to Hyperion and 4.20% to Teddy (6x6). Is this a GOOD thing, in addition to breeding to sireline of Exclusive Native from a Broodmare Sire Tail Female line of Affirmed? :D
