I don't know if I fully understand the question, but if you're asking why the mare was covered by the particular sire, in the case of the first one on the list, it's a homebred.

The Ramsey's own(ed) both Catienus and Kitten's First.

In the case of Title Seeker, I would guess it was a collaboration between Ogden Phipps and Seth Hancock (Claiborne) to breed a champion, possibly to establish Monarchos as a sire. *shrug*

If you are trying to figure which one has the best breeding, it's Title Seeker by a landslide.

Keith,
I dont understand your point either. I assume your point is why a stallion was selected that turned out not to be as productive as previous matings.

Monarchos ran the 2nd fastest KY derby. I am not shocked his first book included a mare like Personal Ensign.

KD Princess was bred to Mr. P 3 times and only got one horse with any talent. No other sibling of Conquistador Cielo had any racing talent.

Vee Vee Star looks like she is stationed in Maryland. She had a partner's hero in 2004. Declan's Moon did not race until 7/2004. The mating with Partner's hero happened in 2003.

I am certain if the bredders of the matings you questioned had a crystal ball they would have chosen a stallion that would have produced a champion.

KD Princess looks like she may have been at Walmac given the sires.

Why breed a great mare to an unproven stallion?

Postby Keith » Wed May 31, 2006 8:45 am

Why breed a great mare to an unproven stallion? In the case of Personal Ensign I think it was breed the best to the best as you seen she was bred to Mr. Prospector, Unbridled, and A.P. Indy. As far as Monarchos there could have a better choice like maybe a proven stallion and a son of Mr. Prospector like Gone West,Carson City, Seeking The Gold,or Gulch. She was never bred to Storm Cat given the fact Storm Flag Flying a grandaughter was Champion 2 year old filly. She has done well with Mr. Prospector getting two Grade I winners and a sire of a Kentucky Derby winner. Her best foal is My Flag by Easy Goer. As far as KD Princess they kept breeding her back to Mr. Prospector and they gave up on her breeding her to other stallions. Like most mares it is difficult to duplicate running ability in full siblings. I just think with her last three foals there could have been a better choice of stallions. Great producing mare Primal Force was bred to Siphon and the resulting foal earned $8,850. Being the dam of Awesome Again she could have been bred to a better stallion than Siphon. If you have great producing mares why breed to unproven stallions gets me.

Keith,
FYI...Personal Ensign was bred to Kingmambo in 2004..the result is a 2005 weanling colt named Baronial....

Its easy to second guess breeders but unless you have a mare like that the decision is not an easy one to make. Who knew Monarchos was going to be a bust as a sire. I am sure they thought about proven Mr. P lines sires like you mentioned but they went in another direction when they went with Monarchos that year...

They went back to the Mr. P line in Kingmambo...I am not sure if she had a 2006 foal...I guess you could call the farm where she is located to find out...

I don't think the Pertner's Hero - Vee Vee Star mating in 2003 was so odd.

When Vee Vee Star went to Partner's Hero in 2003, Declan's Moon was a short yearling. At the time, Partner's Hero's first crop of two year olds had run very well, they were selling very well, and although Declan's Moon was an outstanding individual, his sire was an unproven stallion with a nice pedigree standing for $3,000 whose get weren't selling for much more. Vee Vee Star's first foal was a just turned two year old, so she too was unproven.

Since her quality as a producer is now known, she has produced a full brother to Declan's Moon, and I believe is in foal to Pulpit for 2007.
