What sort of influences are Sassafras and Stonewalk as sires and broodmare sires?

Hi Nessa,

About Sassafras; he was a late developing horse and an out and out stayer. His son Samos III won the French St. Leger and the Prix Gladiateur (4000 m.) His daughter Sassalya became dam of great filly Sally Rous.
An exception to the rule was his son Mon Fils who won the 2000 Guineas, but was not such a great sire.
In my country we had his son Shamaraan at stud, he sired a lot of stayers. His offspring wasn't always very easy to handle, don't know about Sassafras.
The more I get to know people, the more I love animals.

Sassafras is Matchem line through Marco and Barcaldine. He has multiple crosses to Hurry On and Marcovil. That line is noted for producing extremely athletic horses that have made decent chasers. It's also one that is noted for passing on the Jump gene in TBs. He also has one of the strongest jumping Herod lines in his tail female line--that's the Elf, Upas, Dollar sire line.

In short, for a jumping TB, you can't do better in my opinion.

As a sire Sassafras got Henri le Balafre who seemingly did well at stud in Brazil. He also sired Baynoun who also ended up in South America and achieved fame as the sire of Sandpit.
Sassafras is the sire of Tree of Knowledge the dam of Theatrical. Tree of Knowledge is also dam of Taiki Blizzard who won a Group1 in Japan and ventured Stateside a few times. Another of her sons Victory Dance (by Sadlers Wells) went to stud in New Zealand

Hi

Sassafras traces tail female to the conduit mare Primavista (1901) by St Bris. This mare brings loads of stamina into a pedigree. Her son, Priori, won the 1925 'Arc (after the disqualifaction of Cadum). Priori also ran 2nd in the Ascot Gold Cup at 20 furlongs. Other fine runners tracing to this mare are, in addition to 'Arc winner Sassafras, the St Leger (13 furlongs) winners, Moon Madness and Michelozzo. Primavista also produced winners over jumps. She is inbred 4x3 to Prix du Jockey Club (then run at 12 furlongs) winner Upas. As noted above, Sassafras is the broodmare sire of the great Theatrical. Sassafras inherited some of the temperament issues associated with Hurry On, but not to excess. He was a heavily built sort with a workmanlike stride, and was tough as nails.
