Wow, it's a real show to watch all those atypically white-blazed sons and daughters (yearlings) by Unbridled's Song at Keeneland's September. They all look like stamped a la recently retired Buddha. The best thing is that they are all solid looking individuals. No wonder Unbridled's Songs' gets are top notch. Its like he has a registered stamp for all his progeny. I am not focusing here on beauty but on the ability to stamp his characteristics case after case. If thats the case for the looks what may happen on racing ability.
Go to "turfangel" site and watch for yourselves!
Just an opinion!

That's the Caro look. Lots of leg, plain head, and dark gray coloration that turns snow white by age 6 or 7. IMO, Caro is one of the most dominant stallions for type seen in pedigrees today. The good 3yo colt BLACKDOUN, is only distantly related to Caro, but is the spitting image of him as a young horse. Tactical Cat is another example; even as a son of the very dominant Storm Cat, he looks far more like damsire Caro than his own sire.

Dear Michael,
You are right. I agree 100% percent.
Oh my goodness, you just mentioned Blackdoun. I don't know what happened to him in his native France, but he has turned up a superb racing machine. Its incredible how he is racing. His jockey is even more impressed.
Perhaps there is a little wishful thinking but I think that Unbridled's Song is about to become a monster stallion. It reminds me Bold Ruler during the mid to late 60's. Perhaps not a 100-plus stakes producer but a prepotent force.
Regards and Blessings,

Yes, Blackdoun is certainly coming of age. I saw him win both the La Jolla H. and Del Mar Derby and his turn of foot REALLY impressed me. And there weren't many slouches in those fields, either. BTW, he's linebred to Grey Sovereign, probably the nastiest son of Nasrullah.
Like so many from the Caro line, the speed of the Unbridled's Songs probably contributes to their relatively short careers. In Excess has the same problem in California. They really want to route, but because they show such excellent speed, their narrow-minded trainers don't give them enough chance to grow and develop. Hence, a lot of them break down early.
Agent Buzz Chace is Unbridled's Song number one cheerleader, and for the most part he buys for the 2yo market (other than Aaron Jones). The first thing they do is put the pedal to the medal with them and, boom, gone. It's crazy--they've got these 16.2 + hand babies, most with more growth coming, and because they can come down in :10 2/5 in March, they are pushed out of their skin before their knees have even closed.
That's what happened with Unbridled's Song himself. Ernie Paragallo ruined his colt's chances of being a superstar when he rushed him into the Breeders Cup Juvenile. He never was the same again.
Potential owners and trainers should be required to pass a Pedigree 101 class before they are allowed to own horses.
Off soap box

With the talk about Unbridled's Song what are you alls thoughts on Songandaprayer? I must admit I have never been much of a fan of US but I have been looking at this horses pedigree alot over the past couple of days & I really like how things are laid out more esp with a mare & younger filly I've been trying to disect this week.
Hey Tom
This horse fits the description of the 'speed problem' I just offered above. The horse started two times at 2 (won both), and six times at 3. Then retired. What did they expect of a 16.3 hand horse from a fast, but often unsound family? I imagine his 2yos will sell well because that's what he did, and what a lot (most?) of Florida breeders live for--a good 2yo sale.
He had a ton of talent, and with the right (i.e. patient) handling he might have developed into a very nice 3-4-5 year old. I guess six career starts is plenty to make some people happy. They just have to hope their horse can run quite a bit; otherwise they just have another broken down 2yo.
With the racing success of SOUTHERN IMAGE, and the bright future he holds as a racehorse and stallion, maybe more Floridians will get the idea that breeding racehorses is more than just manufacturing TB's who can train like Quarter Horses.

Dear Michael,
Thanks for your posting. Wow, someone told me that Nathoo (1945) was the baddest ill-charactered son of Nasrullah. Interesting competition: Grey Sovereign vs. Nathoo
I agree on your comments on the mismanagement of many of the Unbridled's Songs'. I remember especifically the case of Unbridleds Song himself. He was not supposed to fail the first Saturday of May. His feet are huge and well suited for Churchill Downs but somehow he failed unheraldedly. Yes I remember how tough was the race in which he won the Bredders Cup Juvenile. A real tough one!
Perhaps you can comment with more knowledge of cause on why a huge amount of Cal-bred runners are gelded so early on their career. Best Pal seems like a good example and many many others. Does it relate to the fever of pumping up many "Johnny Bravo"-looking horses regardless of their lifetime starts. Its sad to see those bunch of geldings being "arrivedercci" afterwards. Gelding is hurting the stallion career of many sires because they cannot prove themselves as sires of sires and their linage is stopped. Do you see a correlation between so many geldings and so many early breakdowns? You know, a push-to-the-limit silent drive to extract more early juice from these oranges? By the way which State is less inclined toward gelding Thoroughbreds? This week, a Thoroughbred magazine ran an article on how Birdstone's gelding brother named Civiano was saved from being slaughter.
Does anyone know why Blackdoun's career in France was so humble compared with his newfound abilities?

Training Big Unbridleds
Michael,
I found your Caro and Unbridled's Song comments most interesting.
It's really offensive to see big 2yos. pushed to running at quarter horse speeds just for sales, then to watch them break down at the age of 3 if they get that far. There's little patience among agents and owners when accompanied by greed, sadly. We, on the other hand, have an abundance of patience, since we breed, own and race turf horses, most of whom bloom very late.
We own a share in Unbridled Jet (also a monster like Unbridled's Song) and have a yearling colt and weanling filly by him. They're both out of a Cozzene mare, who stamped the colt with her color and her size (the Caro influence) and the filly with little! She's already bigger than her brother was at that age, but put together. She's got her sire's build and her dam's temperament, also the opposite of her brother. He's as laid back and quiet as they come, and definitely on the smaller side.
I love Caro-line mares. The mating with Unbridled Jet plays on the famous Caro-Fappiano nick (like Unbridled's Song and Red Bullet), so we have much to anticipate in the future, we hope.
Our mare is currently in foal to Syncline. Danzig sons are also a nice nice with Cozzenes. That mating is ALL turf.
