Saint Ballado sons

Postby Derby2004 » Sat Feb 05, 2005 6:42 pm

I hear a few people say that sons of St Ballado aren't going to make it as sires. I noticed that not too many of his sons matured early. Straight Man was late in his 3 year old year before he came around. Only one son comes to mind that really made impressions as a two year old and could even sprint, off of the St Ballado norm. That is Flame Thrower. So maybe his offspring will mature early as he did. I haven't given up faith in St Ballado as a sire of sires. Straight Man should have a good year> I foresee them as late bloomers.

I got an advertisement from Hanson's Thoroughbreds who now stand Ballado Chieftan which cited an article from the Pedigree Post about the prospective sire power of sons of Saint Ballado. I will do my best to find the flyer - but I think it was much too optimistic. I can't find the article archived on the Pedigree Post webpage...

Ballado Chieftan went from Spentthrift at, I believe, $5,000 to Minnesota for $1,250 and only covered 12 mares last year. However, KY may have not been patient enough to wait for the foals to race and see if there would be growing sucess.

He didn't race at two, however, he did show some speed - 6.5 furlongs with a 104 Beyer.

Sweetsouthernsaint was an excellent 2 year old, and has already made an impression with a couple of stake horses, including Better Than Bonds, in his first crop. Considering the lousy mares he got, I think he's got a real shot to produce excellent horses. Not the kind of horse that will produce early 4 furlong 2 year olds, tho.

Saint Ballado as a potential sire of sires

Postby roving boy » Tue Feb 22, 2005 2:27 pm

I have to believe there will be a successful sire son(s) of Saint Ballado. Some would attribute his success to the linebreeding of Cosmah & Natalma (see Ashado, Saint Liam, Freedom's Daughter, Lindsey Jean, Captain Bodgit, etc.); others attribute his success to his being an outcross to Mr. P and Northern Dancer.

If you put stock in either of these arguments, look for the son of Saint Ballado that does not carry Mr. P or Northern Dancer ( or not close up): Yankee Victor has not yet had the "big horse" but he does have a huge number of winners from his 1st crop (18?) and may have a "big horse" on the way. Sweetsouthernsaint is doing quite a bit from lesser quality mares and has a SW. Flame Thrower is a very charismatic horse who has thrown good yearlings. Ocean Terrace is another very attractive individual who will cover his first mares this year.

I have to believe 1 or more of these stallions will be successful.
