Malibu Moon fee raised to 50K for 2007
Just received a letter from Castleton saying they will raise MM's fee to 50K before the yearling sales.

I don't see anything in his statistics or his produce record that indicates he's worth 50K. He's had some nice runners, but nothing recently that makes me go wow.
According to the Bloodhorse stallion register, his yearling average at the sales in 2005 was 28K.
It's higher, so far, for 2006 (short yearlings only) but still less than that proposed fee.
I have a filly I was thinking of sending to him in 2007, but unless something big happens this year (and then maybe the fee will go to 100?) I wouldn't spend that much to breed to him.

i dont disagree with you. i was quite surprised they're trying to push up his fee again.
i think the rationale here is that pulpit will probably have a good year in 06 and will probably go to 100K for 07, so MM may be able to slip into the 50K range. plus, demand was quite strong for MM this year because of the incentives...

Chance at a new Range Rover will do that to people
I don't see Pulpit going up again, but I could be wrong. Malibu Moon has got fairly good numbers, but is hard to justify at that fee (but then so are most of the others in that fee range) especially with Declan's Moon MIA. 2006 is his first crop of KY foals isn't it?

It's kind of depressing to see these stud fees inching (and sometimes leaping
) up. There are a number of stallions I like, whom I would breed to, but not at their current "inflated" fees. As a mare owner, it's very hard to find good value in today's marketplace.
On the subject of value, however, one of the best around has got to be Maria's Mon for 25K. I'm thrilled to have a mare booked to him this year.

Im right with you LSB. I dont have one booked to him this year but if he's in a similar price bracket next year i'll be all over him.
A few more proven stallions that can make a profit at the sales for a breeder are Grand Slam 50k, Gulch 40k, Quiet American 20k, Silver Deputy 30k, Tale of the Cat 50k, Thunder Gulch 25k.
I have a Silver Deputy mare and have another mare booked to him. I also have a mare booked to Quiet American. If either mare produce a filly I will keep the foal but if its a colt it will probably go to Keeneland Sept. knowing their prices are very solid.
Next year im really looking at Gulch, Maria's Mon and Thunder Gulch. With so many of the newly retired stallions being put up at ridiculous prices, im finding more and more value in some of the older warriors. I might not get a homerun, but at least I know I did the best I could to give my mares a chance to improve their immediate pages.
On a side note, there's absolutely NO justification for Malibu Moon's fee other than "they can". I see Bernstein took a price jump as well. Although, if I were debating between the two, Bernstein would be my choice on what i've seen, foal performance wise.

Bernstein is marginal, light boned and throws it. Malibu Moon's offspring have been impressive on the track, especially when one considers their dams! Their performance coupled with the quality of his 2005 foals have made me a believer.
So I think at $30,000 he is a better value than Pulpit at $60,000 (compare their AEI v CI). However, I don't think he warrants $50,000. Stallion Managers seem to occasionally forget that the largest sector of the mare population is in the $15,000 to $30,000 stud fee range. The pool of mares for horses standing at $50,000 and above is very limited.
I hope Castleton Lyons does not push him beyond $35,000.
