Hi FreddyMo,

No, I can't - wish I could. I guess I'm resigned to speculating about the quality of a stallion's book. The only info I get is through occasional news reports, hearsay from friends/acquaintances/websites, and through perusing the sales catalogues for "covering sires" (and as someone recently mentioned, the latter is not always an accurate guage since aggressive stallion owners/syndicates try to keep lower quality mares and foals from the sales.) I don't know of any farm that reveals the stallion's complete book. Anyone got any ideas? How does the Jockey Club figure CI for stallions - is the farm required to list the actual mares that were covered in the report that is sent to the Registry?

hi hurleynyc...

Yes...the completed Report of Mares Bred (which must be delivered to the Jockey Club after the breeding season) includes (among other info) the names of the mares bred.

hi guys

I was somewhat surprised by the absence of any Trippis in the Fasig-Tipton Calder Sale of Selected 2-Year-Olds in Training.

He's a real athlete...and has some very nice ones out there.

hi Derby2004

Yes it will be interesting to "see what the Flame Throwers are made of..." as you wrote.

I've seen some very nice ones...and in general (for what it's worth) they seem to have some fire in their eyes.

It appears to me that overall, they are quite sturdy, athletic types...and for the most part are average size, strong individuals with probably more the-look of sprinters. But I have seen a few that certainly offer (at least the impression) that they may be more than that.

And it appears that they could be ready early.

Is Flame Thrower your choice for Leading Freshman Sire 2005 ?

hi shoopic

Point Given may have received a premier book his first year at stud...but if public auction performance is a reflection of how his sons and daughters are perceived...it might be fair to say that (for the most part) he left much to be desired (at least in relation to his first-year advertised stud fee of $125,000).

It'll be interesting to see how his 2-year-olds fare at the races.

Is Point Given your selection for Leading Freshman Sire of 2005...or is it Aptitude or King Cugat (the other two freshman sires of 2005 that you referenced) ?

I like Flame Thrower, and I will be pulling for him. But his first book of mares wasn't that great. So he would need quantity of runners. I will actually be pulling for Snuck In. He remids me a lot of Montbrook and Briggs and Cromartie have done a nice job managing him. So I have my fingers crossed for him. Flame Thrower is a little too weak on the bottom side for me though

Hi, my choice is Snuck In. I guess because I was a huge fan of his. He didn't get the greatest book though.

hi Derby2004

Best of luck with your selection...I've seen some very nice Snuck Ins.

I suggest he seems a bit under the radar (at least to the extent of advertising and promotion) but could possibly pull it off as Leading Freshman Sire of 2005.

Hi FOS, can you please explain what is wrong Crow, just for future reference. Also Snuck In's broodmare sire is Mugassas. Any knocks against him? Thanks for your input

hi Derby2004

Although Mugassas (broodmare sire of Snuck In) would not be at or near the top of my list of choices as a broodmare sire of sires...he is still a direct son of Northern Dancer...and I suggest that that alone may be reason enough to consider that a daughter of his may produce a son that might have success (at least to some extent) as a sire.

Consider this...many sons and grand sons of Northern Dancer have already proven that they can sire daughters that in turn can produce sires.

Some Examples are:

Northern Dancer
related
Broodmare Sire.....of.....Sire

Hero's Honor...............Elusive Quality
El Gran Senor.............Grand Slam
Lyphard......................Cee's Tizzy
Nureyev.....................Kingmambo
Danzig.......................Distorted Humor
Nureyev.....................Northern Afleet
Al Nasr.......................Honour and Glory
Leo Castelli.................Indian Charlie
Pharly........................Jade Hunter
Magesterial.................Smoke Glacken
Vice Regent................Marquetry
Green Dancer.............Peaks and Valleys
Storm Bird.................Thunder Gulch
Vice Regent................Victory Gallop

And what about the future prospects for success of other Northern Dancer sons, grandsons, great grandsons, etc as broodmare sires of sires...

some examples...

Deputy Minister
Silver Deputy
Dixieland Band
Strawberry Road

and...Mugassas.

Now Derby2004...why not make a list of successful North American sires out of daughters of Crow (Fr) or his sire Exbury (Fr)...or any of their sons or grandsons.

hmmm

What do you think?
