"It will be an awfully long time before we know for sure. Greatness doesn't come in a single race or even a series of races. It comes in perspective. Sometimes you have to wait until a horse is retired before you can point a finger--politely, of course-- and say,'There's a great horse.'"

I found a great quote by Vanderbilt, in the book I'm reading-- it's in response to the doubts about Native Dancer being one of the "greats" or not. He is saying this to Arthur Daley of the New York Times:
"It will be an awfully long time before we know for sure. Greatness doesn't come in a single race or even a series of races. It comes in perspective. Sometimes you have to wait until a horse is retired before you can point a finger--politely, of course-- and say,'There's a great horse.'"

No Mr. Prospector started out in FL with modest expectations even though he was brilliantlly fast I think at the time his record and pedigree were JUST a cut below. Not sure when he was snatched up and moved to KY but it was after his foals started to run and win.
