Info on stallions Welsh Saint (GB) and also Gold Tribute?

Postby Jessi P » Mon Jun 12, 2006 6:18 am

I just bought my darlin Darren a very modestly priced/bred horse for his birthday tomorrow who is by Gold Tribute out of a Welsh Saint mare. I am intrigued by the possibility of running him on turf but am unfamiliar with Welsh Saint - obviously he is a turf sire, being bred in GB.

I am more familiar with Gold Tribute pedigree - impeccably bred, and oddly enough GSP as a 2 yo (second to Silver Charm in a MSW and a head shy of defeating Silver Charm while finishing second in the Gr 2 DelMar Futurity, 3rd in the Gr 1 Champagne S.) while retiring a maiden with a second in MSW company in his only start at 3.

I would love comments, anecdotes, etc about either stallion, especially personal experience owning/training horses with these bloodlines. If you would like to look the horse up, he is a cheap NW2L that I bought last night for Darren to save from the kill pen named Eights and Aces. Screwed up everywhere - sore ankles, rear end is awful, horrible feet, unhealthy, muscle and body sore, teeth incredibly bad but still tried to run enough that I had to let Darren give him another shot. Kind of like the vet's kid who gets the patched up homeless animals for birthdays and Christmases that the vet couldnt stand to euthanize because of lack of owner funding. I will be getting some before and after pics of him to document his progress.

I handed the bill of sale to Darren with an apology for buying him a $600 killer bound horse for a birthday present. And I think it may be one of his best birthday presents ever - MAYBE, time will tell. ;) I do love my darlin Darren - not many men would be so enthused to get a broken down nag for a present. I told him one of these days I want to be at the races with him on his birthday or Xmas, and pretend like we are looking at potential horses to claim to get some input from him, have a bunch of slips made up, figure out which horse he likes best, and claim it as a surprise for him. That would the be ultimate present. Then as a joke I would hand him the halter and shank to take it back to the barn himself. But I would have someone else lined up, of course!

We lost our Dan's Report on April 20, and since then I have wanted our next horse to be a horse that would be killer bound without us. Ace was on a one way trip back to Indiana then most likely to slaughter being so sore and with his owner getting ruled off the track for 2 years (dont know details, going by what he told me). So, he needed us. There is a whole lot of horse in there, if Darren can get it out of him - he needs a challenge.

Looking forward to hearing comments on these stallions, thanks!!

Hi Jessi

Welsh Saint was a Champion sprinter in Ireland, and won stakes in both the UK and France. He was a decent sire. He is becoming a good broodmare sire. Northwest based stallion Consigliere is out of a Welsh Saint mare. The line seems to produce mostly sprinter/miler types on both dirt and grass.

To add to Bill's comment, Welsh Saint is the broodie sire of Da Hoss. Mr. P over Welsh Saint also. Might want to try turf with him when he is ready. Good luck with him.

Hi Jessie,
First of success with your newby and I hope you and your husband have a nice day tomorrow.
I found some info about Welsh Saint. He had a Time Form rating of 126, which is pretty good. His dad St. Paddy was a dual classic winner and a succesful sire. His dam Welsh Way won 3 races, bred 3 other winners and she was sister to 7 other winners. His granddam Honey Buzzerd was sister to Honeyway.
Anekdote: I suddenly remember that the dam of a former racehorse of mine produced a stunning colt by Welsh Saint, Dead Straight, he was built like his name, I was told by his breeder. He was a nice racehorse, won as a 2yo and sent to Malaysia, where he won 4 races.

Hey guys thanks for all the great info! I dont know if we will have Ace sound enough to run on turf this year but it sure sounds like he would really love the surface. Of course horses with ankles I am always a bit leary of running on turf - esp one as hard as our turf course is here. But the hardness would help his rear end, no doubt.

Any clue where I could find a pic of Welsh Saint? I dont think there was one on here, or else I was looking too quickly and missed it.

Thanks again guys, I can always count on you!

Hows things with you Bill? You doing ok? :) I think about you - I need you to give me the same shove I gave you so I finish writing MY book..... :P Its so hard, isn't it??? Finding the time and motivation. Motivation especially. Its easiest to say "Tomorrow, no time today." Esp with 4 little ones!! Ugh. How did you make the commitment to getting DONE???

Hi Jessi

I am doing quite well, Thank you for your thoughts. I guess being old, and with all my kids grown gave me much more time than you have. I admire the way you are able to juggle all of your duties and obligations and still find time to rescue needy horses. People like you are the real heroes of the industry. My thanks to you.

Thanks Karie - thats the same year as my APR... dont you HATE it when it gets out of date, even just one year (when in the scheme of things 12 months of info is negligible)?? Makes me nuts.... and now with calracing tied up with Cali only tracks (and we all knew it was coming) I am thanking the heavens that we watched all of Ace's past races online already.

Cathy great info about Da Hoss being out of a WS mare.... and we all know what a kick butt turf horse Da Hoss was!! There is definitely some good incentive to run Ace on turf.

Bill thank you for the nice words! Some days I juggle better than others, but I do try my best. I am glad you are doing and feeling well.  Keep smiling!
