son of old trieste and out of a daughter of affirmed. He only won $55,000 is he worth taking a chance on as a stud and would you rather breed to horse with soso pedigree and good race record are a horse with great pedigree

Your question is tricky: Damned if you do, damned if you don't. I would prefer an unraced stallion prospect over one that gave it a shot and made very little. I like the pedigree but the race record is less impressive. I'm partial to the Old Trieste pedigree anyway as I have a mare in foal to his full brother, New Trieste.
What is the reason for his retirement? Injury, lack of desire, etc?

If you have the funds to support him, perhaps you should give it a shot.
