Any Thoughts on Gold Case?

Postby ZiaLand » Sun Oct 01, 2006 10:30 am

I'm interested in any thoughts on this stallion.

His race record is only 3 starts and 3 wins, but his progeny to date seems to indicate talent and soundness.

Thanks all.

I couldn't find anything to verify my memory, but I think Gold Case contracted laminitis not long after his 3rd win and had to be retired. So, unless you count laminitis as an inheritable weakness, I don't think his short race record is indicative of unsoundness.

Indychase, thank you. Good to know. :D I'll try to verify that with the farm.

No problem. If you hear from the farm, let me know if I remembered correctly. I'd like to think I didn't just imagine it. :)

Indychase, you were correct on your recall.

I just talked to the farm that stands him now. The information they have is that Gold Case was undefeated his 2YO year including two stakes wins.
He was turned out for a rest before his 3YO campaign, and had some slight laminitis develop in a front foot. Although minor, the decision was made to send him straight to stud, probably to avoid chance of injury while racing.

We're giving Gold Case a really close look. Anyone have any comments or opinions on how Forty Niner has faired as a sire of sires?

Much thanks,
Laurie

Just *bumping* this thread.

Any thoughts or comments on Gold Case?

Any idea why he would be in New Mexico instead of Kentucky or Florida (or California or New York)?

Am I missing something major about this stallion?

Much thanks for any feedback.

I saw him a few years ago at Adena Springs. He was their cheapest stud for several years, and I was surprised they kept him so long. I don't recall any serious problems with him except his short race record, but he wasn't getting any commercial support at sale. I'm sure Frank Stronach's farm would support him well with good mares, but he never really proved himself.

Forty Niner has been a great sire of sires, but they have often died young for various reasons, maybe coincidence. Examples: Twining, End Sweep, Jules, Coronado's Quest, Rich Man's Gold. (And I'm not sure about Tactical Advantage). Distorted Humor is alive and well. His sons are found in most racing states as regional stallions, and in South America and Japan.

Good breeders' incentive programs make New Mexico enticing for stud owners, especially with a state-stallion-only rule. Several Forty Niner sons now reside in Louisiana for the breeders' incentives there also.

Much thanks, Henthorn. This helps me understand his history. I guess what's considered "not proven" in Kentucky has a whole different spin here. The fact that he only had three starts is not that important, in my mind at least, since he wasn't retired due to injury and seems to consistantly produce horses with race records that suggest soundness.

He could be very well supported in New Mexico.

Thanks for your feedback. Very much appreciated. :D
