RIP EL Gran Senor

Postby CA Michael » Wed Oct 18, 2006 1:16 pm

Euthanized today at age 25. He must have been one of Northern Dancer's best, and remaining, sons.

On the cusp of being called a truly 'great' horse, it was a great pity that his fertility, which began as poor and declined into miniscule, limited his opportunities to sire one in his own mold. The few times I saw him at Ashford I was impressed by his kind nature, unlike his paternal half brother Storm Bird, for whom three tough Irish lads were needed to show him.

RIP.

Oh that's sad. :(

Not sure why, and I feel kinda silly admitting it, but I thought he'd passed already. I was probably thinking of End Sweep or something. 25 years is pretty good and I hope his last days were full of contentment. Taking into account his physical limitations in the breeding area he's certainly contributed a lot to pedigrees with Toussaud and Bright Candles.

I will never forget that gigantic battle with Secreto in the Epsom Derby in 1980 I think it was, one of the reasons I got interested in racing abroad, what a Derby!!!

He would have to be older than 25 to have run in the Epsom Derby in 1980.

Was he older? I kinda thought he was :?

25 isn't that old...but older than so many of these stallions get to last "these days"!
