Opinions on Niigon?

Postby Mood Swings » Sat Oct 28, 2006 5:07 pm

I was wondering what peoples opinions are of this stallion by Unbridled out of a Nureyev mare. Niigon will be standing in Ontario for a $5000 Canadian fee. Thanks! :)

On paper, he's a standout value, IMO. A Queen's Plate winner with good speed, by a proven sire of sires in Unbridled. Unless he's a midget supported by four pretzel legs, I would have to say he's a no brainer for Ontario.

Nope not a midget, nor does he have pretzel legs LOL. Actually he is a rather good looking individual and tall, if I recall correctly he is a little narrow in front but I imagine he will fill out once he settles into his new lifestyle. The reason I asked for input is because there is another stallion who would cross well with my mare and I've heard rumours that he may not be staying in Ontario, however a first year sire is only a first year sire in his . . . first year

Frankly, I was surprised that Niigon was retired to Ontario. Unbridled sons are quite popular, and there aren't any more of them in the pipeline. I thought Taylor Made would have grabbed him, sent him to Florida for $15,000 live foal, then moved him to KY at $50,000 once he sired his first SW!

Same cross as Manistique. With Unbridled on Top and the excellent BMS Nureyev on the bottom, I don't see any reason why Niigon can't get a dual type horse, both turf and dirt.

I would be most concerned about his race record, and his lack of a graded stakes win, which may be why he is in Ontario not Florida or Kentucky. The Queen's Plate is a nice race that I would love to win, but the bottom line is it is a state restricted race, with the restriction for all practical purposes being Ontario born. That's a rather small pool of horses to beat even if some of them are very well bred. If he had gone on to win a graded stakes it would be irrelevant, but he didn't, he came up short when asked against graded company. He might turn out to be a great sire, but he doesn't have the type of race record I like to see in an unproven sire. JMHO

Saw him race in the flesh and he's a looker.
May his babies run long on the lawn, the dirt and the Poly!
