Siphon @ Pin Oak in PA

Postby griff » Fri Apr 06, 2007 5:19 pm

I've beenlooking for a "commercial" stallion in PA and so far all I'v found with a decent sales record is Siphon from BRZ.

Would appreciate feedback for PABRED to sale:

Siphon X Perfect Colours by Accelarator
Siphon X Adamandia's Girl by Cryptoclearance
Siphon X Hot Concern by Concern

Siphon

I just claimed a Siphon mare from Pimlico called Moonlight Cocktail.
She is out of a mare called Harvest Moon (Majestic Light). She was a bullet of a little runner, correct, and has a great body but isnt very big. She also has quite an alpha attitude. I don't know how or if she ever sold, but I believe that she was PA bred. After seeing this little filly, Siphon is A OK in my book! (She cycled and caught right away too, which is a nice advantage!) Best of luck to you.

A Siphon filly (Hip 285)out of a stakes placed mare was the the second high seller ($115,000) at the Texas 2 yo in training sales on Tuesday at Lone Star. She and two others ran a sale leading 10.0 in the under tack show.

Bred Moonlight Cocktail to Eltish the end of March. Nice early cover, first time mom, so I am pretty excited for next year. Eltish will add a little bone and perhaps stretch her out a little bit (she was a one turn kind of girl). I am considering selling her in foal this fall though.....

Moonlight cocktail sold for $2,800 as a yearling and $20,000 as a 2yo. Both at a Fasig Tipton auction.
Good luck with her!

It's had to evaluate Siphon as a stud as i have no knowledge of his bloodlines.. He certainly has a very good race record but Im still curious as to why his get are selling so well.

yea Griff,

Those (ARG) throw me through the loop as well. But I understand they are typically hard knocking and fast if they can make it in the US. If my mare is any indication of the rest of his progeny, I can see how they may sell well. Albeit, MC is small. She is very correct, and ran ran ran, I have noticed the trend in a few other Siphon's. Who knows, after Invasor, people are probably just jumping on the southern blood bandwagon.

Griff

I have been studying Siphon for some time as I look at opportunities in state bred programs. His current stud fee is $5000 LFG. Also standing at $5000 LFG at Pin Oak Lane Farms is Real Quiet. Just across the border in MD is standing Go for Gin, a KY Derby winner like RQ, at $4000. Some statistics:

Horse Ave Starts Ave Earnings Ave 2YO Earnings %SW Median Earnings
Siphon 8.55 $35376 $15131 2 $13555
Real Quiet 10.04 33431 9497 3 8667
Go for Gin 13.18 65603 6773 4 20075

Go for Gin's Ave Earnings is skewed by Albert the Great who won ~$3mil. With that removed the average is still $51014/starter. Siphon seems to throw an earlier maturing runner than either GFG or RQ. GFG produces the most durable horse based on average lifetime starts.

In terms of 2 yo sales the data are:

Horse 2 yo Ave 2 yo Median
Siphon 109595 70000
Real Quiet 31086 23000
Go for Gin 45527 25000

It appears in this sample the market favors the potential for early earnings over soundness and total lifetime earnings. I am not at all sure what that means as far as the risk coefficient based on % starters:

Horse % Starters % Winners
Siphon 67 43
Real Quiet 62 34
Go for Gin 72 48

The other possible variable is the state bred program. Since all three stallions are relatively new to the mid Atlantic market I have no feel for how that may impact sales price.

Good Luck!
