Just looking at the results of last nights broodmare sale for Adena. They sold 101 horses for 1.7 million, I bet if you add up the covering stud fees for all those IN FOAL mares you get way more than the 1.7 million they brought in.
Stud fees still need some adjusting to my way of thinking. Not just Adena's fees... an adjustment across the board would give breeders a better chance to stay in business.

Well, except that they're Adena stallions, so there really weren't any fees. Adena uses this sale to promote their stallions -- they don't need to worry about recouping stud fees on every sale, necessarily.
Jane wrote:I realize that Adena is not paying their own stud fees. As a potential customer it also makes me think that they might be charging me too much for their product. Let's face it, when the sale topper goes for 130,000 in foal to Awesome Again what would make me want to pay 150,000 for a service.
Guess it depends on the mare. They generally aren't selling G1 winners or producers at this sale.

Well...actually they are.
They've sold the dams of G1 winners Ginger Punch, Spun Sugar, Flower Alley, Toccet, Real Buddy, and Buddy Gil at previous sales. Also the dams of G2 winners Going Ballistic, Rabdaroo, Leprechau Kid, and R Lady Joy.
Jane, the quality of the mares was down. Most will probably head out of the state to regional markets and state breeding programs. Any foals sold out of these mares in KY will certainly drive the sire averages down, which will really impress Keeneland when it comes to placing the other yearlings by these sires in the sale - Book 8 will be "Adena day"!
