Bottom line for me would be ......... What are the odds that I can get a stake winner for the money invested( stud fee).

The belief that crossing my mare with that stallion will produce a quality youngster, with reasonable economy, and can be safely done.

Cheated didn't I? There's more than one reason in there. I can't say there's any ONE factor that my decisions have been based on more than others. I look at a number of factors and weight them according to importance. For me, confomation weighs more than pedigree. Location is important, but can be offset by other factors (lower stud fee, great breeding facilities [good people and safe, quality mare care]).

race reord and pedigree go hand-in-hand, pedigree a little bit more. But to Sell or Race - That is the question! But yeah Location too

Money.

The resulting foal will make you money if you sell; resulting foal will save you money if you race.

Has advertising ever helped in your decisions?

Results........ and why I rarely opt for an unproven stallion...... to many proven stallions to risk taking a chance on an unknown. And by results I mean a stallion that consistently beats his CI number with a well above AEI number.

Much like handicapping a race when selecting a stud.... look for consitency and earnings and substance over style. There's still a bit of value in some stallions around the country with a bit of due dilligence though the vast majority are WAY over priced as well as over hyped.

Yes. Good advertising accomplishes what it should, gets me to the website, or the stallionregister, to look further into the stallion in question. Gives me some good starting points. Some are better than others. Three Chimneys, as expected, does an excellent job, takes the classy approach much like Darley... understated, strong. Some miss the boat. This weeks Thoroughbred Times has some great ads.

well i guess i should explain further....yes location...#1.......but what location depends on what your going to do with the resulting foal...sell ....or race...if racing ...and you have one mare...then for example were i race in NY, and on a limited budget, i would breed within the state,.. thus 20% breeders awards added to my purse money for 1-4 placings.. after one or two hit the races and prove themselves.....or rather the mare...... breed her to better studs that you can afford regardless of location then.

on the other hand....first foal......you could go with a stud that looks good on paper {stats} high % that make it to the races ect......thats whats great about this ..........its all on you.

i agree with Lisann & dray33.. i would rather know my mares are cared for than any other aspect of breeding. after you get a mare back that looks like a PETA add some things become more important!

dray,
What would good advertising consist of to make you want to breed to a particular stallion?

yeah.... but it my book that goes with out saying....{good care}...thats a non issue......but i guess and know some people play it on the cheap....some pay good $ and get peanuts.....so your dead right...what good is it no matter who you breed to if the mares not kept in excellent shape.

yes, I really learned a lot since I have been in this. The farm that had my mare in 05 came recomended, and has many followers. my mare was there for months didnt get in foal. and I dont blame them for that she was fresh off the track and I should have waited till the following year.. but 3 trips to the stallion, 3-4 months of day rates, and huge vet bills... I was ok with it because all the time she was there I thought "I knew I should have given her more time before breeding" and then to see the shape she was in when I picked her up. I was pissed.. I had my vet waiting on my door step when I got her home, she was very dehydrated looked horible! I had him document everything and took pictures and kept every receipt to verify me picking her up on that day.the farm is well advertised and not one picture from their advertisement are from their farm! all beutifull KY farms and horses..never again..
