New Zealand derby winner will be featured on Bred to Win this week, and he 's a cracking type. There will also be a feature on some of the star foals born at Woodlands Stud this season. Plus all the breeding news and the maiden winner of the week.

Thanks for the heads up.

Out of curiosity Wallinga (or anyone else with an opinion), which of Zabeel's four Gr. 1 winning entires to go to stud in the last few years do you think is the best hope of carrying on a Zabeel sireline? St Reims was a seven-figure yearling who won the Derby (2400m) and then came back as a 5yo to win another Gr. 1 (2000m), who has a pair of more-than-decent sisters in Champagne (2x Gr. 1 winner in Australia, 3x Gr. 1 placed) and Sursum Corda (2nd, NZ Oaks).

Don Eduardo was the most expensive yearling ever sold at auction in Australasia, is from the Eight Carat "royal family", won the AJC Derby (2400m) and placed in 3 other Gr. 1s and already has runners, including Dashing Donna (3:1-2-0, stakes placed), Divine Rebel (5:1-3-0, an Oaks nominated filly who was a good winner midweek) and Il Divo (6:1-4-0, Gr. 2 placed, Gr. 3 placed, amongst the Derby favourites).

Savabeel was a Gr. 1 placed 2yo (Champagne), won the Spring Champion (Gr. 1, 2000m) and then won the Cox Plate (2040m) vs older horses as a 3yo, beating 10 other Gr. 1 winners. His first first crop yearlings sold well a few weeks ago with a few (7 or 8 ) going over $200,000.

Or there's the one in Australia, Reset. I am concerned that he only had 5 starts (maiden win, HCap win, HCap win, Gr. 1 win, Gr. 1 win) and only won up to 1600m, but Sir Tristram was renowned as a sire of stayers though his big heir Zabeel won the Australian Guineas (1600m) and didn't show as much stamina as most Sir Ts. Zabeel is now known as a sire of stayers, so maybe Australian Guineas winner Reset could come through as his heir.

I think Don Eduardo will struggle, (there's a Bred to Win story on him in coming weeks incidentally) that eight carat family tends to lean towards the female side becoming great progenitors. Although I think he and particularly Octagonal will make great broodmare sires.

Reset is not an impressive individual, you have to remember Zabeel was bred to be a derby winner and wasn't far off in the ajc derby but he is also a magnificent sepcimen of horse flesh, it's no wonder he's done well.

I really like St Reims he has a great international female family, he's nice to look at, has a great temperament and he is not as boof headed as some Zabeels (probably why he hasn't had to be gelded) and he was a top galloper. unfortunately he may not get the best mares in New Zealand because of his lack of two year old form.

Savabeel should do well. He was a top galloper at two and three, only good three year olds win the cox plate. he's out of an oaks winner and he is not typical of Zabeel males. He was very well supported at Waikato and he seems to be stamping his stock. Whether that is a good or a bad thing remains to be seen.

The thing is that with Octagonal and his 3/4 brother Kaapstad.......they looked like their dam eight carat. Don Eduardo is very much in the mould of his sire so I give him a chance!!! But he was very dour so he will need alot of speedy mares.
