We acquired a recently retired Royal Academy son, out of Barn Swallow. He needed a home and I wanted a horse to work with. He's 8 yrs old and still a stallion. We have the 2 TB's. Are now getting out of the Saddlebreds after 30 yrs.
Can you folks give us some background on either his sire or dam? We bought our mare last year, she's by Posh and out of Dusty Lou. Didn't get the stallion to breed to our mare. We've also been involved in breeding and showing dogs for almost 20 yrs and I find Genetics to be very interesting. And have some understanding on confirmation, but have no clue as to racing types etc. It's all new to us. But we want to learn.
Thank you so much for your help.
Gary

http://www.taylormadeecatalog.com/pdfs/Ksep08/3897.pdf
and the brief bio statement:
His dam was a stakes winner at 3 and 4 and produced 3 stakes placed foals. One might be your stallion even... he matches most of the info you put. The 3 stakes foals were mostly running in Illinois, it looks like.

Family of G1 winner Western Playboy.

and the brief bio statement:
His dam was a stakes winner at 3 and 4 and produced 3 stakes placed foals. One might be your stallion even... he matches most of the info you put. The 3 stakes foals were mostly running in Illinois, it looks like.
2nd dam produced three stakes horses, one of which was G3 placed.
Family of G1 winner Western Playboy.

Although the family may appear regional at first, it's actually a fantastic clan. He traces back to Khara who's the ancestress to Habitat, Dancer's Image and Northfields among others.
If he's got the physical, he could be a useful stallion in a small, regional market. Royal Academy hasn't been a top sire of sires, but he's had limited opportunity in this country as one.

I believe the trainer said he had won around 275,000.00 on the track with 48 starts. He's 8 yrs old. And from what I understand has never bred a mare.
Like I said this is all new to us , we are still trying to absorb the terminology that goes along with the Sport. It's really exciting, but once in awhile I need to give my mind a time out to stop spinning...ha.

Certainly a good, hard knocking horse to have made 51 starts - I would not consider it Out of the Question to breed some to him since you are in Missouri (not a hotbed of activity for TB stallions). Some of the more forward thinkers in the biz look for some grass these days with the invasion of the synthetic surfaces. California has now ONLY got synthetic and turf. Your horse was a router, and also won on the turf. I would look for something Gulch, mare wise..

I'm sorry for lacking knowledge on the subject I have asked about. And I certainly appreciate your time and effort to research our horse. But is Gulch a bloodline? And can you expand a little more on this point of the different surfaces that are used in racing?
Also what are these on the bottom of his pedigree?
Conduit Mare Profile = 7-7-3-7-1 Speed = 14 Stamina = 8 Index = 2.00 Triads = 17-17-11.
Thank you.

Turf is just that, natural grass. Synthetics like Polytrack were mostly developed in Europe as training surfaces. You can imagine what happens to turf if it is galloped on every day by hundreds of horses -- so they needed an alternative. Consequently, since it was developed for horses bred to run on grass, horses who have turfers in their pedigrees might be expected to perform better than down-and-dirty dirt only horses. Dirt surfaces also vary quite a bit - Tampa has a deep yellow sand track which is great to train on. Churchill is a sand and loam mix. Dirt tracks also vary quite widely from time to time due to maintenance, maintenance changes, addition of different compositions, etc. etc. etc.
Gulch is a bloodline, look at Gulch, Thunder Gulch, Scrimshaw, etc. Then look at the performance of those with Northern Dancer line broodmares - and specifically Nijinsky. It seems to work well. I am taking my Moscow Ballet mare to Scrimshaw this year.

Madelyn.... If cost or location wasn't an issue would you choose breeding your mare to Thunder Gulch over Scrimshaw.. Wasn't sure what the deciding factor was for you to choose Scrimshaw..No criticism implied. Just interested in your thoughts.

Cost and location are ALWAYS an issue. Scrimshaw is $5K while Thunder Gulch is $15K - and Scrimshaw is at Millennium (+) while Thunder Gulch is at Ashford (-). More importantly, though, Thunder Gulch is a RESULT of the very cross I am drawing on - Gulch with Northern Dancer (Storm Bird). So no, I wouldn't send my Moscow Ballet mare to Thunder Gulch. If I was going to step up to that sort of fee, I would send her to Gulch, who is $20K and at Lane's End. But physically, I like Scrimshaw best of those three.

Madelyn, Thank you for your reply. I enjoy your posts as many of the others on the forum.
When you suggested a mare with the Gulch lines, would you also happen to know breeders in the midwest that would be breeding along his lines?
