I think their plan was to breed the best to the best and it didn't quite work out so well.... Anyhow, if anyone is interested in breeding to Plan he is in quite a few of the stallion season auctions. Matter of fact, there are currently no bids on him right now in the ITBOA Stallion Season Auction at www.thoroughlybred.com. You might be able to steal him for $500 live foal if you like him. And all progeny of stallion sold at the ITBOA auction can become eligible for the ITBOA Stallion Futurity and the ITBOA Stallion stakes regardless of the state that they are foaled! Check out the ITBOA Auction now and "plan" your best mating at a reduced cost!

Does he look a touch upright to you?
He's 2 x 4 to Storm Bird, which didn't seem to hurt him much as he's a graded stakes winner. A foal of his would be 3 x 5 (assuming the mare didn't add any more). That kind of linebreeding to SB wouldn't bother me at all--and it's worked fine for other horses like 3 time G1 winner Summer Bird who's 3 x 3.

Summer Bird's linebreeding to Storm Bird is an example of perfect positioning - 3x3 and in the center of the pedigree, via a daughter on the sire side and via a son on the dam side. Plan's pedigree does have the double of Storm Bird but it is not as well positioned, or derived.
As with all breeding theory, the above is theoretical, not fact....
Summer Bird is certainly a better looking horse than the photo of Plan.

A difference of opinion is what makes horse racing and missionaries.

A little off topic, but I really like Summer Bird. We're sending him a mare who brings Gulch (nice cross with Storm Bird) and another cross to Weekend Surprise (a double of which worked out well Stevie Wonderboy, Theysken's Theory and Mad Flatter.)

Hi LB- following the off topic line...
I love the idea of doubling Weekend Surprise and am surprised we have not seen more instances of it - AP Indy, Summer Squall, Honor Grades, etc offer opportunities.
For a LA client a few years ago I purchased an inexpensive SSquall mare in foal to Stephen Got Even (a la Stevie Wonderboy) - she produced a nice filly who is a useful allowance horse and has a yearling full sister. This mare was not expensive and has no blacktype in her 1st dam, however she ran a little and is well made. She could be a star in the LA program.
It would be interesting to see Adoration (Honor Grades) bred to Bluegrass Cat (out of an AP Indy mare) thereby getting 3x2 half brothers and 4x3 Weekend Surprise. Super Saver or Any Given Saturday would do the same...

da hossman, I totally agree about Weekend Surprise. In the same vein, we had a Summer Squall mare that we bred to Lemon Drop Kid to double up on Lassie Dear. The resulting filly was small (as was the mare) and sold to Russia where she became a G2 winner this year at 2.
The mare I spoke about in the post above has Weekend Surprise as her second dam. It's not easy to find a way to double up on WS (who usually appears in stallion pedigrees through A.P. Indy) without adding another dose of Mr. P up close which I'd rather avoid--and still stay commercially viable. Summer Bird brought me pretty much everything I wanted, so I'm excited to see what this mating brings.

The feeling I get about the ones who moved is they are trying to make a lot of money in breeders' rewards, and moved their horses most likely to make the statebred programs happy. If they move on a couple of years later, they get breeders' rewards, the mare owners get breeders' rewards and the opportunity to breed to a different set of (mostly quite useful) stallions, and the next state/province they go to gets the same. It's a pretty shrewd business move, I think.
Considering Adena is restricting the size of Touch Gold's book again they really had no underlying motivation IMHO other than the rewards to move him. I can't imagine they would have had trouble getting 55-60 mares to him again. I believe he may already be full in NY or close to it. While I was not going to breed to Singing Saint I did ask "is he going to be here next year" and the response was yes so something had to have come up after that which made the relocation more attractive then keeping all those stallions where they were.

He's still at $500 in the ITBOA Stallion Season Auction. $550 could get him if you like him. Go to www.thoroughlybred.com right now as bidding ends at 7pm CST tonight!
