RAISE A NATIVE

Postby Patuxet » Sun Dec 12, 2010 9:44 am

Here's a link to a wonderful contemporary assessment by the keen-eyed Charles Hatton: http://ddink55.wordpress.com/2010/12/12 ... tive-1963/

Of particular note is that his trainer, Burley Parke, declared that Raise a Native was ” the fastest two-year-old I ever trained” and that his bowed tendon was the consequence of an accident, surmising he stepped into a hoofprint or a deep spot in the track, rather than the result of some inherent weakness. Park said, “His legs never gave us any trouble, nor showed any evidence of weakness.” Louis take note!

Of Raise a Native’s physical type it is often said: “He is a bigger horse on the scale than under the standard.”

The aforementioned sentence from the cited article makes one seriously ponder a lot.

I've wished for years that someone would collect together Hatton's writings. He was a great writer and a great judge of horses.

I came into our sport sixty plus years ago and reading Charles Hatton was an important part of my early education. I too wish that the DRF would reissue his work, either in print or online.

Another source of my education was George F. T. Ryall's “The Race Track” column in The New Yorker, written under his pen name of Audax Minor. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audax_Minor Happily those are available online in The New Yorker archives.

Here's Charles Hatton writing about Secretariat: http://www.drf.com/blogs/secretariat-ch ... mbling-pps

Here's another informed article about Raise A Native written by Steve Wolfson, a son of RAN's owner, Louis Wolfson.

My favorite Charles Hatton RAN quote in The Daily Racing Form: "Raise a Native worked five furlongs along the Belmont backstretch today. The trees swayed.''
