Twenty in One won at a mile at Churchill Downs as the 0.60 favorite.
http://wwwequibase,com/static/chart/CD111915USA7.pdf

Twenty in One belonged to Calumet and is 13,2,2,3 plus 4 4th places which came after she was used as a rabbit in a G3 for some reason (she does not have early speed). Her trainer kept doing the same thing over and over. All her races were at a mile or 1 1/16 on dirt except one on synthetic and one on turf. Her consistency is nice and she runs well enough to suggest she needs to find a sweeter spot - probably longer.

This race was her first in a claimer, I'd guess Calumet just wanted a win and off to the breeding shed. Of course she was claimed so her career isn't over yet... Good luck to her.

Distorted Beauty is running in the My Charmer G3 at 1 1/16 at Gulfstream W Nov 21.
PPs:

She's in Florida with a new jockey and her trainer is in NY. But she's flexible, can run in front or come from behind. That's good, there's every kind of runner in the race. The ones at single digits in the ML are 2 closers (one is the fave), a speed horse and a presser.

Invading Humor tried to steal the Cardinal Hcp G3. She went to the lead but instead of slowing the pace to hurt the closers she ran fast enough on the yielding turf to set the race up for the 2.30 favorite, a closer who likes an off track and won handily. Invading Humor gave way in the stretch and finished 7th followed by all the other single digit betting choices. Her jockey had never ridden her before and let her run freely instead of rating her.

Distorted Beauty was beaten only 5 1/4 lengths in the My Charmer G3. She had a jockey new to her and got an all-over-the-track ride. She broke 6th and went 5 wide into the first turn, settled in 7th between rivals in the backstretch, went to the inside in the stretch and wasn't far back but didn't produce a big kick and finished 7th. She doesn't like being buried but if she is shown the front tries harder.

Successful Brothers was 3d at a mile on turf at Aqueduct. He broke last, was still last at 1/2 and ran 3-4 wide on the turns then showed good energy to miss 2nd by a head.

Expression was sold as a broodmare prospect for $160,000.

Her owner/trainer, Charlton Baker, claimed her at 3 for $35,000 and retired her at 6 as a stakes winner who was multiple graded stakes placed. She earned $439,538.

A cyber-toast to Expression and Charlton Baker! May she produce many more like her during a good, long life! Charlton Baker is an excellent trainer who deserves many more good horses in his barn!

Expression threw a clunker at Saratoga, very unusual for her, and had only one work after that in October. She may have suffered an injury and not recovered. So there will be no graded stakes winner for Invasor this year. Expression ran in 2 Graded Stakes and finished 3d in both, too bad she won't get another chance. Maybe her offspringn ...

Street Invader was 2nd of 7 at PARX at a mile&70
He was doing well in allowances and looked like a possibility for a small stakes, then he hit the skids and this is his best performance in awhile, in a claimer. He is 26,7,2,2 and may have issues. His first win was at 3 in October.

Aniar wired a race at Fair Grounds at a mile&70
He didn't win until he was 4. He has 5 victories but only 1 is in an allowance. He is 17,5,2,2

Balqaaa was 3d of 10 at a mile on turf at Aqueduct.
He made his debut at 3 this year and is 5,0,2,1
http://www.equibase.com/profiles/Result ... registry=T

Invasion Point was 2nd of 6 at 1 1/16 at Tampa Bay as a front runner.
He first won in October when he was 3 and is 16,3,3,2
http://www.equibase.com/profiles/Result ... registry=T

Envahir was 2nd of 12 on synthetic at 1 1/16 at Golden Gate Park.
She first won a a MSW at 3 then won an allowance at 4. She is 9,2,6,0
She is very consistent. If nothing happens to her she may get a chance to run in a small stakes.

Looking at these horses, Invasor sires front running milers that develop late and aren't particularly fast until they are older. They run fairly often for awhile, accumulating damage, then they disappear. His 5 stakes horses looked a lot like these, except they ran less often. All but Saint Arthur won stakes at 4-6 and didn't show real speed until they were 4 or older. His graded stakes winner won at 1 3/8. Invasor himself won the Triple Crown in Uruguay but what was impressive was how he won, not the times. When he ran in the US from 5 to 6 he was the fastest horse in the world - but not a front runner and not a miler. Hes best races were at 1 1/4. And he only ran 12 times.

My take on it is that Invasor and the horses he sires are old fashioned horses. Trainers see so so milers. Owners want a Kentucky Derby horse. Today's race horse needs to show real speed at a mile or so when 2 or early at 3 to get respect and be pointed to the better races and the few longer races. Invasor does not sire this kind. Maybe he'll sire horses successful in South America and they'll come here and beat up on our older horses as Invasor did himself. Invasor's sire, Candy Stripes, failed as a sire here, went back home and sent his offspring out to get revenge. It will take years to find out. For now the story is told.

I've learned a lot more about racing from following the offspring of Invasor, my favorite race horse of them all, than I'd have learned cheerleading for top horses during those years. It would have been more fun having a series of heroes and heroines. But following so many young race horses showed the difference in racing since my father took me to the track and we followed the greats of the seventies. Today many horses are owned in partnership where the emphasis is on early return on investment: precocity in racing and early retirement to stud. The Triple Crown races are the Holy Grail of racing. There are no Big Races for older horses anymore except the BC, even though older horses are faster than 3 year olds. We are lucky to have had American Pharoah since there are few races for stayers or even middle distance horses and we've stopped breeding for them. (That's not a problem for the TC, even if all the TC horses are sprinters one of them will still win the 1 1/2 mile Belmont.)

Sprint speed has gone up. This is not just an American phenomenon. I'll attach an article on racing in the UK that indicates speed in middle distance and long races has not increased but the speed in sprints is increasing for ALL runners, not just the winners. Almost all horses start out sprinting, and in Europe as in the US a horse that doesn't show something at 3 is unlikely to progress so precocious speed would be an advantage in Europe, too. The landscape of racing is changing and the new Greats will be very different from the old Greats. It's no use to repine, if Eclipse came back to life he'd compile a poor record in today's racing.

It won't let me attach a pdf so here's the Abstract of the article published in Biology Letters:

Racehorses are getting faster
Patrick Sharman, Alastair J. Wilson
Published 24 June 2015. DOI: 10.1098/rsbl.2015.0310
Abstract
Previous studies have concluded that thoroughbred racehorse speed is improving very slowly, if at all, despite heritable variation for performance and putatively intensive selective breeding. This has led to the suggestion that racehorses have reached a selection limit. However, previous studies have been limited, focusing only on the winning times of a few elite races run over middle and long distances, and failing to account for potentially confounding factors. Using a much larger dataset covering the full range of race distances and accounting for variation in factors such as ground softness, we show that improvement is, in fact, ongoing for the population as a whole, but driven largely by increasing speed in sprint races. In contrast, speed over middle and long distances, at least at the elite level, appears to be reaching an asymptote. Whether this reflects a selection limit to speed over middle and long distances or a shift in breeding practices to target sprint performances remains to be determined.

It's the last day of the year and Invasor's stallion career in the US is over. May a few of his progeny survive all the sprints and miles without developing issues, and win a stakes. May the sisters racing in New York score a Graded Stakes. I've gotten fond of "my" horses.

It will be 3 years before any of his South American offspring race. If the horses there are less precocious than ours the Invasors will get off to a good start. If the genes that complement Invasor's genes are more commom there the chance of siring a top horse are better. Invasor's sire failed as a stallion in the US but succeeded in South America ...

A Happy New Year to all!

I always liked Twenty in One, a beautiful roan mare that Calumet bought as a brood mare prospect after she raced a few times and may have been injured. They raced her instead and she won her MSW comeback race in style. After her trainer used her as a rabbit in a Graded Stakes she seemed to have burned out (she's devoid of early speed, not a good rabbit). After a series of 4th place finishes they dropped her into a 30k CLM that she won - and was claimed. Her new owners ran her back in a mile Gulfstream allowance that she won today coming from last. Here's the video with two grey mares duking it out:
http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/ ... on-1-14-16

She's earned $120,340

Envahir won a 1 1/16 allowance by 1 1/2 at Golden Gate on synthetic in her 2016 debut. She's 4 and has been lightly raced 10,3,6,0 (the unplaced finish was a 4th). Lightly raced is good, maybe she'll come into her own this year.
