Need opinion on three stallions

Postby springboro » Thu Aug 25, 2011 1:34 pm

I'd like your opinions on these three stallions:

Red Giant
2004, ch
Giant's Causeway-Beyond the Sun,
by Kingmambo

Van Nistelrooy
2000, ch
Storm Cat-Halory,
by Halo

Aragorn (IRE)
2002, ch
Giant's Causeway-Onaga,
by Mr. Prospector

who will be the most successful of them?

Aragorn but he won't have the sheer numbers of the second. I don't know that I like Giant's Causeway over a son of Mr. Prospector as opposed to being out of a Mr. P mare.

I'm going to go 3-2-1, actually tought call for 3/2 both will have the numbers out there but I just think Aragorn will have the more diverse runners.

It really depends on the mare and what you're trying to breed.

Van Nistelrooy was very popular in New Zealand, but the farm where he stood was unable to renegotiate the lease and he stopped shuttling. Truthfully he should probably go back there. He's free of Mr P so you know he would have gotten a lot of mare by him or his sons...but not that much to show for it. Adding more Northern Dancer seemed to work, and he did really well down under with Sir Gaylord (available in north America via Lord Gaylord, Bates Motel, and Lord Avie).

Aragorn has 74 starters in 2 crops and no stakes winners yet, in August of his 3yo's second year racing. Something that really strikes me is how his highest lifetime earner is racing in Japan and has only managed to win about $120k. With the purse structure over there, that's a high claimer to middle level allowance horse at best. He got some really nice mares at Lanes End...but winning a $8000 purse claimer at River Downs when you're out of a Seattle Slew out of a Lyphard doesn't cut it.

As for Red Giant, he's beautifully bred and has a good race record. He's also at Three Chimneys, which doesn't exactly have a good track record at starting out young stallions.

For the money and if you want a chestnut Storm Cat, just go to Pure Prize.

Van Nistelroy has had 6 crops to get it going, and his SI is lagging his comp index significantly. He can certainly throw a good one, but I don't think he's going anywhere.

Aragorn is a disappointment as well, although some times the turf types only come on later. He didn't do his best running til 4, and was a G1 winner. Couple of European champions close up, so I think his best chances will be with Euro types.

I love Red Giant's potential. Whats not to like - G1 winner, world record holder. Couple more Euro champions in the pedigree. All his success was on the turf, so that will limit his options I would think - although he should be fine on all weather.

So my choices would be 1-3-2.
