AP Indy pensioned.
It has been reported today in the Bloodhorse that AP Indy has been pensioned, at age 22. It's kind of early, if you think that his sire got mares in foal to age 28, if I remember correctly. Could the infertility be related to being a ridgling?
A real end of an era AP Indy, Kingmambo and Storm Cat in the space of a year or so.
Well it gives other stallions more "elite" mares in their books.
Two of the three mentioned stood at Lanes End, big loss to their bottom line as a company, good thing for the owner it will keep the staff on their feet - can't see many tunring up late for work in the next while!

Does anybody know who was Seattle Slew's last foal? And where he/she is, did it race, etc?
I know poor Slew had that wobbler's disease, wondering if Indy had any problems with that. I could have sworn that I read somewhere that some of his offspring also suffered from that??

We will NEVER see another Ruffian......
I'd agree with El Prado -- it's not unusual for a stallion, ridgling or otherwise, to be pensioned in the early 20s. There were rumors floating around that his fertility was getting a little shaky last year, so I'm not really surprised by anything except the fact that he got no mares in foal at all instead of a handful.

They're both still handsom though!

Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs even though checkered by failure, than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much because they live in the gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat.
I recall SEATTLE SLEW also being a ridgling....have I mixed that up with anothere great race horse being syndicated for stud?
What I remember is his being a ridgeline becoming a very public news item when the 'values' of his syndication as a stud were announced, setting new records. Some questioned the valuation - not only becasue it broke prior records and he was, as yet, unproven as a stallion but some also brought up the question of his stallion capabilities citing his having an undescended testicle. I recall reading years later that there had to be some special "assurance" clauses addressing these concerns in the syndication agreements in order to protect the stallion share investors' investment if he did prove to have issues.
As it turned out, of course, Seattle Slew was a super stallion and remained fertile, prolific producer to his 28th year. I always understood that quite a number of the Seattle Slew line have displayed this trait.
Would love to know if I've got some jumbled up memory issue OR this was indeed the case with Slew > anyone to confirm/deny?

There is no replacement for ground truth.
May 2013: Plan ahead now for the Phalaris/Teddy Centennial!

I think Weekend Surprise was the source of the problem
Weren't most of her colts ridglings?
Might be interesting to see if any of her daughters foaled colts that are ridglings.
