Breeding Fees

Postby starlitlaughter » Tue Jan 24, 2012 6:21 am

I had a question and thought I would post it here to see if anyone in this community had heard of anything similar.

I recently got a contract to breed to a TB stallion who is available for live cover and AI - majority of the contract was pretty cut and dry, until I came to the fees where I saw listed "live cover" fees. I inquired about this as I had never seen it before in contracts I had read before. I was told that the agreement was designed to make the cost of breeding between shipment of semen for AI and live cover equivalent. Therefore in addition to the stud fee and deposit, there were "handling" fees.

Anyone seen this before?

He is marketed towards the sport horse industry. If you weren't concerned about having JC papers I'm sure you could breed to him via AI. I am only interested in live cover for my TB as I want papers.

I had just never heard of adding live cover fees to make the cost of AI and live cover equivalent...

All the TB stallions I breed to only breed live cover, so no, I have not seen a contract like the one you're describing. Truthfully, the extra fee doesn't make much sense to me but of couse someone standing a stallion can charge whatever they feel the market will bear and it's ultimately up to the buyer whether or not to agree.

This is not unusual in contracts for breeding TBs to QHs. The AQHA allows AI and The Jockey Club doesnt allow it. So if you are wanting papers and have a TB mare, then do live cover. If it is a QH, you get papers either way. There is nothing shady about the contract as every farm that ships charges extra for collecting semen, shipping, shipping supplies, etc. It is an expensive process to ship semen. Most of the time you have to put a deposit on the shipping container as it costly.

This is unheard of in the TB world - but quite common in some other breeds. A lot of QH's have "chute fees" - which are the fee for having a mare covered live. But in KY typical stud fees for TB stallions are quite a lot higher than other breeds.

breeding fees are like hotel rooms. some can be negotiated and some can't

none can be negotiated unless you ask for consideration
