I saw Swaps near the very end of his life, at age 19. I wish I had not. He had wasted away and didn't resemble the horse we've all seen on tape and in photos.

Conversely I saw his sire *Khaled when he was 25 years old at Ellsworth's bare-bones ranch in Chino. Although a bit sway backed he still looked relatively healthy and was still breeding mares.

I agree, Swaps was by far the best Cal-bred in history. He would have run away and hid from Tiznow, Lava Man or Best Pal. His loss to Nashua in the match race was not an accurate reflection of his superiority; as the article alludes to, he was injured and shouldn't have run at all that day.

Ellsworth was a b*st*rd, who starved Swaps's dam to death. He would do anything to anything to squeeze out an extra dollar. I hope he is roasting over slow coals for eternity.
