I've scratched my head for years about the Florida stallion CUTLASS FAX. http://www.pedigreequery.com/cutlass+fax
An unraced horse with only an average pedigree by commercial standards, CUTLASS FAX is inbred 2 x 2 to APHONIA, a winner of one small race. She is sired by the good stakes winner, but failed stallion, DUNCE. However, she was produced by the excellent racemare and producer by *MY BABU, GAMBETTA (dam of GAMELY), from the Blue Hen *ROUGH SHOD II female line.
In fact, the close connection to *ROUGH SHOD II is really this horse's only satisfying attribute to me.
His sire, CUTLASS, won only several small races, but became a major Florida stallion. He is inbred 3 x 3 *MY BABU, so CUTLASS FAX carries three strains of that top-class, but vicious, stallion.
Apparently someone saw or knew something about CUTLASS FAX because he sired not only a lot of hard-knocking winners, but more interestingly, a very high percentage of stakes horses. And none of them is out of a good mare.
Here are his progeny: http://www.pedigreequery.com/progeny/cutlass+fax
No superstars, to be sure, but still an outstanding record for a horse which, other than his intense inbreeding, had no apparent qualifications as a sire.
I'm not advocating breeding to unraced stallion with average pedigrees, but I do think CUTLASS FAX is a good example of how propitious use of inbreeding can be successful, and of luck!
A very interesting (to me) stallion
