TB stallions standing to non TB mares?

Postby Slew83 » Sat Mar 12, 2005 7:40 pm

Any one know of any top ranked thoroughbred stallions that stand to non TB mares(i.e. quarter or paint mares).

I saw an Honour and Glory quarter horse filly go through the Heritage Place sale I think in January. I know Walmac bred Favorite Trick and Salt Lake to quarter horse mares, but John T.L. Jones has quarter horse interests. I believe Favorite Trick had an All American qualifier in his first crop. They also experimented with breeding some top quarter horse mares to Alydar ages ago.

Did the Alydar quarters ever race?

Slew83, I suspect you could breed any quarter horse mare to any available TB stallion that you can afford, unless the stallion is already overbooked. Any successes or failures won't find their way into the stats on the stallion advertising pages, as it only records TB success or lack of it. Of course, if the horse is known for producing good quarterhorse crosses, they would start advertising also in the QH publications.

I suspect if you look up some of the quarter horse organizations on-line, you'll find references to TB stallions that are already considered worthwhile matchups. Usually TB sprinters fit the bill.

Actually, the stallion has to be "listed" with the AQHA; I list one of ours, Bad Boy Atta. Otherwise, the foal cannot be Appendix reg'd.
So Run for the Roses, as fast as you can.....

True, but all that requires is someone that is willing to do it. As long as someone is willing to pay the $50, send in a copy of the front and back of his papers and pictures it is a done deal. (And he has to be DNA typed.)

I have seen a AQHA Appendix filly by Skip Away - Named "Can U Skip"
I know she was a race winner.. and half to a stakes filly named "Can U Fly" (by, Iroquois Park) Both were owned by Bernie Flint and trained by Richard Rettelle....
I was told that "Can U Skip" was sloooooooow... They sold her to someone in Oklahoma... Never heard another word about her.

______
Whoa.. I looked up Can U Skip and she is in the all breeds database and she is actually 3/4 thoroughbred.. and 1/4 quarter horse.. ha ha

So are there Skip Aways, Hennessys, Honour and Glorys, and Alydars quarter horse colts at stud?

The Alydar offspring were unsuccessful. I think Justanold Love had one and I can't remember the others. I'll ask my dad as he knows more about it.

There is a quarter mare in my barn for foaling that is in foal to FUNONTHERUN by Runaway Groom. I understand they are very anxious to breed to QH mares. He stands in Ar.

Here is the Hennessy son.

His name is Check Him Out.

Edited to add that his first foals are just yearlings of 2005. So it remains to be seen how they do in the sale ring and the track.

The only Skip Away QH is the 2000 model mare mentioned above.

Honour and Glory only has 2 QH foals. Both performers, neither was stakes placed. (Neither was very fast.) And both are mares.

Alydar only had 4. All foals of 1985. 2 Performers.

As far as soms at stud, it costs money to find out and I am too cheap to check.

Can't think of any off hand other than the Hennessy above. I believe the other Hennessy is a mare that is a full sister to the stud above.
