Giant Surprise

Postby 3nutmeg » Mon Apr 08, 2013 7:40 pm

Does anyone have any thoughts of Giant Surprise as a stallion? He stands at Vinery NY.
http://www.pedigreequery.com/giant+surprise. I know he won his debut as a 2yr. old, but was vanned off. By the looks of his left front leg he must have broken it. They are offering awesome discounts to my A+/A mares. Any objective thoughts would be welcomed. Has anyone seen his foals? He entered stud in 2012. Thanks.

With respect to your post, I would wait to see what his siblings do. I clicked on the dam to see what she did and I saw one race? And he got hurt after his first start... I would wait to see what his bros and sis's do.

On the upside his 2nd dam was a G1 winner.
On the downside 1 start and broke down.
He was bought for just over 100k in 2010 and must have been conceived when Giants Causeway was around 350k stud fee.

The Nick cross he rates with will be his sires and not his he might like other mares compared to his sire.

If you have nice proven mares why not go with proven NY sires?

Why take the risk for saving a few bucks on stud fee?

He is a Storm Cat line stallion who broke down after 1 start, expect many of his progeny never to see the racetrack.

Dublino has some good questions. However, it might be good to add the trainer into the mix. Was this horse a late maturing horse that was rushed into 2 year old races? Is he a big guy, was there a lack of conditioning that contributed to the breakdown? Bad temper on the part of the horse (not the trainer) ? Did the breakdown occur as part of a multiple horse pile up? Hardly seems fair to attribute soundness problems if there was a pile up.

What is known is that the horse suffered some sort of breakdown, and was even enough tempered to survive the treatment and recovery. And didn't get any of the related foot and hoof problems that have killed other horses that survive the initial breakdown.

And how has the Storm Cat over AP Indy, or AP Indy over Storm Cat done in general?

There are so many sons of Storm Cat & Giant's Causeway out there now and almost every one of them ran more than once. Repole claimed he was sending some of his "good" mares to the stallion, why not ask the farm which one's. At least then you'd have some idea of the quality of mares in his first crop because those are the one's that will precede your foal both through the sales ring and onto the track.

Even the best deal which is no stud fee at all won't make the cost of raising the foal any less.

There are some other GC's out there that look more promising and some are already doing great.
