High Fly and Greater Good both look very impressive so far this year. Who says an affordable sire can not compete with the likes of Fusaichi Pegasus and Storm Cat. Nobody seems to want to breed to Intidab and Atticus is on a list of worst value stallions. Horses with affordable stud fees keep our dreams alive. Malibu Moon's best horses are out of Parfaitment and Norquester mares. Malibu Moon is royally bred but quite affordable when he first went to stud. Lost Soldier is affordable and is well represented by Lost in the Fog. Northern Dancer and Mr. Prospector have quite an influence even in the bloodlines of an affordable stallion. Lost Soldier and Atticus are grandsons of Northern Dancer. Malibu Moon and Intidab are out of Mr. Prospector mares. Maybe High Fly will win the Derby.

While both Greater Good and High Fly have shown consistent ability, I find it very hard to believe either one will finish in the top 3 the first Saturday in May. Greater Good has already run farther than his pedigree appears to allow, but he will be facing quite a few other horses at Churchill - horses that will not be making their first start of the year and come up (predictably) a bit short.
High Fly, what can I say about a son of one of the most disappointing horses to stand in KY in a long time? He's tough and consistent but I just cannot believe he is top class on the dirt. I believe he will be exposed in the Florida Derby.
However I am keenly aware that often horses seem to exist only to prove our opinions wrong!

Keith, this is an interesting thread. Thanks for starting it. In answering your question, neither of the colts, that you mentioned, will win the Derby. I don't think that Greater Good will want any part of 1 1/4 miles. Its the Phone Trick thing. And unless this crop of 3 year olds is very subpar, I don't expect the Atticus colt to win.
Watched TVG and Frank Lyons commented that Greater Good looks like he could run 2 miles! I do not believe he was looking at the horses pedigree. I think he was commenting on his running style only. It does appear that he will have no issue with added panels. I do agree the phone trick genes do not lend them selve to that conclusion. Time will tell, the horse has done nothing wrong. I am not a fan, I think he is just to slow, but he has been a good winner to date.
Greater Good's speed/sprinting sire is very balanced by his stamina-oriented dam. Distance is not exclusively from the sire. It is hard to ignore Secretariat in the dam's pedigree, plus the graded blacktype up the damline in longer distances than sprints. If the race and the pace set up for this horse he could be a threat....
So Run for the Roses, as fast as you can.....
High Fly wins again
High Fly wins again. The top two sires of the Florida Derby winner and runner up are considered turf breeding. The Northern Dancer sire line does again with High Fly and Noble Causeway. How long till High Fly and Greader Good get the respect they deserve.
