Carpe Diem retired with knee chip

Postby Cree » Thu Jul 23, 2015 12:25 pm

Another Pletcher trainee bites the dust. 6 starts, career lasted 9 months. Yeesh.
I believe TJ predicted this horse had physical issues, and so he did.

Pushing these horses to make the Derby. I know more plays into it than the trainer, but I still feel sorry for these horses.

Setting aside his injury and not wishing that on any horse, for most horses there are just windows of opportunity for them to show what they are capable of. Carpe Diem has a really strong, classic cardio that was combined with genetics associated with early maturity. Typically these horses are at their best as late two year olds and early three year olds when they have a physical advantage over their peers, many of whom might have a classic cardio, but lack the genotype for early maturity.

He fits that to a T.

PS. That was quite the performance by Breaking Lucky yesterday! I thought he was the 2nd best looking horse on Queens Plate day (after Shaman Ghost, of course).
