Sultry Song a very underrated turf sire

Postby TomFool » Sat Jul 09, 2005 9:08 pm

I am not a big fan of Coxs Ridge but in being a turf minded breeder I cant help but pay attention to Sultry Song. In looking at his dam its easier to understand why with him being a half to Solar Splendor. My brainstorimg ideas latley have been maybe taking a good SS mare to King Cugat. I just thought I might bring this to others attention & get their thoughts? Thanks

I agree on SS. He has been flying under the radar but has been brining real attention to himself with several excellent turf runners the last year or two. A pretty nice sire who probably hasn't gotten all that good of mares over the years.

Sultry Song has a very strong female family.

Sultry Song is out of Sultry Sun the dam of two Grade I winners and three graded stakes winers in all. Sultry Song has a half brother in New York named Strategic Mission who won the Fort Marcy H. and was 2nd in the Shadwell Keeneland Turf mile stakes. Strategic Mission has an awesome pedigree but is that enough to make him a good sire because he was also a good race horse. He does offer a great pedigree for $5,000 but why not breed to Sultry Song who is proven at $5,000. Time will tell. Strategic Mission has two year olds this year.Sultry Song's third dam Sunny Morn produced a horse named Lexington Park who was by Quadrangle and raced until he was 15 and he had 47 wins. Sunny Morn is by Princequillo. Sultry Songs broodmare sire Buckfinder has a superb pedigree considering he is by Buckpasser and out of Shenanigans the dam of Icecapade, Ruffian, and Laughter. Sultry Song's 2nd dam is by Damascus who's best son Private Account is out of the great Buckpasser mare Numbered Account. Sultry Sun is a reverse cross of that of Private Account having Buckpasser on the top and Damascus on the bottom side. Sultry Sun has similar horses in her pedigree like that of Private Terms.
Private Terms 2nd dam is Shenanigans and Sultry Sun's sire is out of Shenanigans. Private Terms sire is by Damascus and Sultry Sun's dam is by Damascus. Sultry Sun's sire is by Buckpasser and Private Term's sire is out of a Buckpasser mare. Sultry Sun is one of the great mares of today. Looking at her pedigree she has great mares Shenanigans and Busanda as well as a mare who is the dam of a horse who won 47 times racing until the age of 15.

Is Kingmambo a sire of sires?

Postby Keith » Sun Jul 10, 2005 5:12 am

Is Kingmambo a sire of sires? His sons have not taken off as sires and maybe it is too early to tell. Will he follow in the steps of a horse like Alydar who sired great racehorses but his sons never really took off as stallions. Time will tell. I understand you liking King Cugat who has a good race record and is out of a Majestic Light mare who is a half sister to Seeking the Gold. but why are his foals not bringing lots of money at the sales? Have you thought of Strategeic Mission? I do not if I would line breed so close but Stategic Mission crossed with a Sultry Song mare would inbreed Sultry Sun 2x3 but line breeding Damascus and Buckfinder probably would not be a good thing. Five Star Day is a Mr. Prospector cross through Carson City on top of Reggie V. who is by Vanlandingham a son of Cox's Ridge. Sultry Song seems to like Key to the Mint when you consider Singletary and Marthas Music. Double Honor is a nice proven stallion for $3500 being by Gone West-Holiday Snow by Storm Bird. Double Honor's second dam is by Key to the Mint. Cox's Ridge and Sultry Song like Double Jay when you consider Life's Magic and Prime Timber. Tenpins is line bred Nodouble and I would consider him as a stallion but I would rather go with a proven stallion like Regal Classic. If you want to add Key to the Mint Let Goodtimes Roll is by Black Tie Affair-Recharged by Key to the Mint. If you are looking to add some Naskra I would consider Flame Thrower who is a nice looking individual. His 2nd dam is by Naskra. If you go with King Cugat good luck because he is a well bred individual. I have not took the time to look at the nicks but I have just mentioned some stallions to look at because you should always leave your options open. I always like to take everyone's opinions into consideration because some people have some very good advice especially if they have seen some of the offspring at the sales and on the track.

hello Keith & thank you for your response to my post. Your thoughts and opinions are appericated and respected. Is Kingmambo going to make a sire of sires? Its very hard to say for me at this point as a sire he very hit or miss even. It seems like you either get brilliant ability or not much of. There does not seem to be much inbetween. I put King Cugat in the first category for sure as I really liked him as a racehorse. The only time he finished out of the money was in the BC Mile when as he started his move he clipped heels or almost did so and lost all chance. I have never seen him in the flesh so his front end may be very suspect I dont know but with a general dislike for turf minded horses has to be the main thing that hurts him at the sales. Sultry Songs family obviously has a liking for Majestic Light who in my mind is a very underrated turf source in pedigrees as well IMO. Combine that with SS liking for more Buckpasser from balanced inbreeding with top class Buckpasser mares produced the likes of Revved Up via Cool Mood & Shes Got the Beat via Uncommitted. It looks to me like used in the right way with the right mares a King Cugat over Sultry Song mating could work. The general Mr P over Coxs Ridge cross has proved to be a good one as well. This has just been something thats been on my mind the last couple of days as I know we all have those kinds of new thoughts and ideas on what pieces of the puzzel we need to breed good racehorses.
