Moving from Spendthrift to Gainesway...
Is there any particular reason behind all of the moves from Spendthrift to Gainesway?...Mr Greeley, WhyWhyWhy and Cuvee. Does Spendthrift need to make room for incoming stallions? Just curious as it seems a large move. Thanks for any insight you might have! AK
Spendthrift was taken over by B Wayne Hughes last year.
The one I want to know about is Little Missouri. I visited with him as he was the sire of one of my favorite horses. He was really showing his age last year and they didn't take him out of his stall. Does he still have a home or was he sent elsewhere? I have this fantasy that maybe Gainesway took him as part of the package deal since they do have a way with the elderly...

Hi ak and Sysonby,
Gainesway's stallion roster got old in a hurry, losing Irish River, Lear Fan, Broad Brush and I expect Mt. Livermore, in a few short years. Cozzene, as remarkable as his fertility has been, is going to be 26 in 2006.
Smoke Glacken really stepped up to the plate and they've been adding prospects like Orientate, Officer, Sunday Break, Birdstone, Ten Most Wanted and Tapit but entering 2006, none will have had runners so they added depth by acquiring Mr. Greeley.
It's interesting to see a major stallion farm make their moves to try and position themselves for the future.
Regards,
Pete

Hi AK,
The Chesapeake area breeders seem to like proven sires and thus Two Punch has thrived. The area has done very well in proving sires in the past 20 years like Allen's Prospect, Two Punch, Not For Love and Polish Numbers (amongst others), originnally at low fees and later they've supported these sires at the sales too.
I like Smoke Glacken more than his sire. The buringin question for 'Smokey' was whether his get would go two turns because he couldn't, and they can.
I've twice bought and sold mares in foal to Smokey before the baby was born, so he's been good to me. I always liked his chances at stud. The second foal brought $82,000 as a weanling and is a SW.

Pete
