Kahuna Jack

Any opinions on this stallion? Has anyone seen his foals? He has a high winner percentage but where were they running?

Hi Jean,

I could only find Kahuna Jack having 1 winner out of 6 runners according to BRIS unless there info is outdated.I remember he went through the Jan. Barretts sale in 05 and they sold a ton of his babies and most went between 1,000-$2,500.I cant recall of the top of my head but i believe he sold for 10k (Kahuna Jack).

I'm sure I remember reading he has moved to canada.. I do know he has at least 3 winners of the 6 and one is a stakes winner.. We got beat by one in a MSW @ Bay meadows.

K.J. had been standing at Vern Olson's Running Luck Ranch in Fresno, Ca., then went through Barretts for $1,500, and Pegasus Ranch (Tom Bachman) sold him. I saw he was advertised on Starquine with a Florida seller, and then he ended up in Canada, at stud.

I heard he was intitially used as a teaser, however he was getting good runners from limited opportunities, including stake winner Thirsty Guys. One of his daughters, Jackieosofabulous (Mercedes Stable), will be running in the downhill turf course allowance, today at Santa Anita.

I believe he will prove to be a good regional sire (By 49'er out of a G1 winning Northern Baby mare). I have not seen this horse in person, but I was impressed by his numbers due to his limited opportunities. He was ranked 9th by SPI in 2005 California Stats with 11 winners from 14 starters.

I actually worked at the consignment he was in at the Barretts sale last year. I didn't work with him much, I had the "pleasure" of working with his offspring in the same consignment. I did go have a look at him a few times out of curiosity. He has a big hind end, he's offset through his knees (not sure which side was worse), he's not very tall (average to smallish size), and I remember specifically thinking he had short legs. He had a reputation of being a bit of a nutball, but he was well-behaved at the sale, that was why he was originally bought to be used as a teaser.
The colts and fillies that I worked with (I believe there were 4) were all rowdy handfuls, we had an ongoing joke with that group of horses. They weren't handled much before the sale, so that may have been a reason why they were a little on the wild side.
I remember his '03 colt out of Diamonds and Divas as being quite tall, long and leggy. I don't really remember the others. The highest price for them was $3000, with a low of $1000 (Barretts upset price).

Cree, thanks for the insight it's very interesting to me. I wish he had stayed in California. I'm guessing his yearlings were'nt that impressive, due to the sales prices.
