Conrast, I looked at your mare today. As of about 1 pm, she hadn't foaled yet (though there were 6-7 that went through the ring that already had.)

Oh--forgot to mention...is her name Miss Spender or Miss Splendor?

It says Miss Spender in the book, but the sign outside her stall had the right hip # but said Miss Splendor.

Thanks for looking at her. I ended up calling the sales office this morning myself because I was dying to know. It's Miss Spender.

madelyn, are you at the sale or are you looking at the results online? Because I was there for most of the day and I don't see it that way.

Yes, many of the prices are low--below stud fee for mares and/or yearlings--but most of horses I've seen look like they're bringing what they are worth. Don't forget that the sellers are letting their horses go for those prices (for the most part) so they must agree.

This sale is typically where owners dump horses they don't want. There is some quality here, but not much. If someone is shopping for an older mare with a bit of pedigree, no produce record, and an iffy physical, then there are bargains to be had. But that's true at most sales.

Just watching a little bit of the sale and checking out pedigrees I'd probably agree with LSB. I think there are some bargains if you are willing to take a chance. You had some mares go through cheaply that had some iffiness in there produce records that might have been due to sire selection. If she had been reasonably well made, I would have liked to have had the first mare that went through. Alot of the yearlings I saw sell were pretty rough.

Demi Monde

Postby jagger » Sun Feb 12, 2006 5:22 pm

This looks like a good "breed to race" sale. As others before have mentioned, an older mare with some pedigree and less than stellar produce record and if you want to take a chance. Demi Monde, Hip 279, by Easy Goer, a double copy mare herself with 5 double copy mares on the bottom and Sires of the Year grandfathers, Lyphard and Alydar, looked like a horse I could take a chance on. Top bid of 15k did not sell. If 20K would have gotten her, I would take her to some well bred and still inexpensive stallions with significant X-Factor in the pedigree. For 7.5K, Mingun would get 4x4 to Buckpasser and Northern Dancer, 5x5 to Nasrullah, Native Dancer and Nearco and 5x6 to War Admiral. For the same price, his 1/2 brother Eavesdropper would get 3x4 to Buckpasser, 4x4 to Raise a Native, 4x5 to Northern Dancer, 5x5 to Native Dancer, Nasrullah Somethingroyal and Nearco and 5x6 to War Admiral, Teddy and Princequillo.

Prices were low across the board but appropriate for what went through the sale.

I got a Sky Mesa on pedigree alone. She's a little weak through the knees and a touch small but she holds only broodmare value to me and if she grows into herself than so be it. I own part of a 3 yo half to this filly's dam and we love her. So it was my chance to jump directly into the family.

This is a sale where you have to compromise certain things. For me, it was the physical in a filly. I can breed around some defects and HOPE for the best.

Tomorrow the book is a little stronger and i've heard decent things about some of the better pedigree mares from one of my agents. I think prices will rise a little bit. I also heard a few new people are headed to the sale to pick up stock cheaply. Hopefully for the sellers, the prices a little more competitive, but im still hoping for steals as a buyer.

'Tis true, that's another way to put it. The book looks stronger for tomorrow. I'm not "buying".. just watching.

A pal picked up one today. It's a bit of a rearrangement, with the "better" horses toward midday tomorrow.

Not a real pretty sale, but a handful of the yearlings looked cheap as racing prospects. Impossible to tell without being there, but hips 5...58...175...222 all look like nice buys on paper.
And DOWN the stretch they come!

Actually day two was a complete reversal and prices were VERY strong. I can't believe Private Horde brought $92K!!

The prices on broodmare prospects reflected a bit of a scramble and perhaps mild desperation. It was a nice afternoon for the sellers :D

I'm buoyed a bit by the bounce.
