I found alot interesting after looking at the excel spreedsheet of the results for today. First of all, if you bred to footstepsinthesand as a commercial breeder, you were SOL today. his stud fee starting out was what..30k? today he had colts sell for 7500, 14,000, 25000, 25000, 28000. even more telling, Coolmore was in on none of them.
on the otherhand, if you went with Shamerdal, you didn't break the bank but you made out pretty well.
interesting article on the days events

If you sold the Monsun (GER) colt for 400.000gns about 640k euro from an fee at 40K euro.
you would go skyhigh.
It,s interesting that the 4 highest paid yearling all went to the coolmore team. And none to the godolphin team.
The broodmare sales are expecting to see an lot of fireworks for the best numbers and even the tv will cover it.

it's funny to say this, but godolphin does a pretty good job of showing financial restraint, better than coolmore IMHO. when they want something, they usually put a cap on it and when it gets there there' out. also note that godolphin isn't going to buy anything from a coolmore/ashford stallion.
also, goldolphin has been buying the american broodmares and horses off the tracks in droves.

I would say the exact opposite. Time and time again we have seen Coolmore back out of bidding wars with Darley particularly since the purchase of The Green Monkey and its for obvious reasons. Coolmore is a business with a budget (admittidly a large one!) where as Darley is a side hobbies of Sheikh Mo.
You make some fair points about Footstepsinthesand vs Shamardal at the sales but Shamardal had only 6 progeny go through the ring while Footsteps had 12...of which only two were not sold and the others you didnt mention sold for healthy figures such as 52000, 90000, 130000,100000,82000 etc. Camas Park and Ashtown bought 3 of them....owned by Timmy Hyde and Paul Shanahan..Coolmore men.

if they wanted the green moneky bad enough they could have outbidded coolmore for it. it's just that darley got to an (expensive ) point where it wasn't worth it anymore.. that point was just higher than normal.
while darley is a side business, keep in mind that alot of lives are at stakes in that company, not just sheikh mo. he employees a hell of alot of people across the globe and it's not fair to say it's just a game.
when a yearling isn't even getting the STUD fee that he commaned, that's sad. regardless of how many are going though the ring. and his stud we wasn't that damn high.
with that said, on the avg, if you had a shamerdal yearling v. a footstepsintehsand one, you were better off. not trying to start a fight or anything, just pointing out obervations that maybe the public isn't as receptive as coolmore thought they would be to a stud with 3 lifetime starts

Of course alot of peoples livelihoods are at stake.....but Darley is funded by Sheikh Mo's oil resources...Coolmore is funded by their stud fees or at least the majority of it is.

Again I can see where your coming from but considering it was the first sale where both stallions progeny were up for sale (and they were only foals) and it was a particularly volitile sale to boot I think its probably too early to pass judgement on either stallion.
