This mare sold as a short yearling at Keeneland January for $5,500 on a published stud fee of $5,000. She later sold at an August sale in Texas (same year, as a yearling) for $4,000. I don't personally see the kind of value here that could guarantee a return on the Cost of putting this mare in a "good" sale.

Thats what I was afraid of, she couldn't run but her family has a lot of black type just horses most people haven't heard of except for Eddington. Strange pedigree.

it is a nice pedigree with plenty of black type up front. We should point out that this is a great catalog page! Dam is a stakes winner and 1/2 to a G1 winner, and has produced two stakes horses of $200K plus. Ain't too shabby at all.

however, as was pointed out, her performance (both on the track and through the sales ring) are negatives.

The only thing that I could see that would inflate this mare's sale possibilities is to breed her early to an outstanding 1st year sire in Kentucky. No guarantees, but if she is big and in foal... that's the best way if you want to sell her commercially.

now, will you get enough back to merit the expense of all that?

of note... she is an outcross to all Northern Dancer/Mr. Prospector/Raise A Native lines. For all those folks foaming at the mouth about pedigrees and fragility, take careful consideration!

I ran across this mare on craigslist and picked her up. She is a big (16.3 or 17 hand) lanky girl with a lot of bone and big head. She had 7 starts from 5 to 7.5 furlongs and it would be nice to see what she would have done if they had stretched her out. Her sire Pyramid Peak was primarily a 1 1/8 horse. Her damsire Nikoli won the Irish 2000 Guineas and his sire won the FR 2000 Guineas. Her 2nd damsire Sir Ivor won the ENG 2000 Guneas. Did someone say miler/router?

Not sure what stallion would best fit this mare. I like to stay close to physical type and aptitude (ok, I know she didn't run but maybe there's some genetics there). Something in KY for 5k or less I am thinking would fit the ticket. Suggestions?

She was too high on her 2 years ago when I looked at her. She was starved to death when I saw her. I offered her $800 and was afraid she would take it, but she wanted 1500 and came down to 1200. She has had her ever since. I'm glad she will get some groceries now.

Offspring ought to catalog OK. I wouldn't worry about going to KY, just don't get too much tied up in getting her in foal. You are better off being a medium size fish in a small pond with this mare. I'd find a good deal in a stallion service auction and keep her close to home. They should be cheap and time is coming up for them to start.

She was extremely skiinny, was in a pasture with some other horses and cattle and not much grass that I could see. The Lady said she doesn't feed grain in the summer. The mare was covered in bug bites, hadn't had any vaccinations althrough it looked like her feet had been recently trimmed. Oh well. The lady was motivated to sell.

Provided all goes to plan I will breed her to a name-brand stallion (he doesn't have to be very expensive) and get the mare into a state bred program where I'll have a chance at breeders awards if the foal runs.

In the meantime it is interesting to shop for a stallion that would fit. That's part of the fun!

You can breed to Artax for $2000 or less in OK. Although he was Champion Sprinter he was competitive up to a mile 1/16. He is a big bodied horse like her and I think the speed influence would help. If some of his good looks rubbed off it would be a bonus. Its an A+ nick and there are 2 stakes winners from that cross.

Unfortunately, in this market, the mare has no value.

She does have a reasonably good page, but it hurts her to be so lightly raced and 9 years old. In other words, no one thought enough of her to breed her when she should have been bred.

Best bet is to breed to race, if that is your game.

If you want to breed to sell, you need a way better mare in these times. Do not waste your time and money on a mare like this.

I am in agreement with tbrace. You did a wonderful thing in saving the mare from the life she was living (not too appealing by the sounds of things), however unless you are breeding to race I do not think she would be an asset to your breeding program. Although her dam produced two stakes horses, she struggled with fertility. She slipped in '90, '94, '96 and '99, her foal died in '97 and there were four years that she could not get in foal at all. All are red flags especially considering that Star is a 9 year old maiden. As well she only has one producing sibling and she is not producing much. I wish you the best of luck in whatever you choose but be aware that buyers are extremely critical. Besides money always looks better in your pocket then it does in someone else's

Does this mare have any jump in her at all? If she's sound and a full 17 hands, she's bred to be an eventer from top to toe. If you are looking at her as a broodmare prospect, you might consider a sporthorse TB (Coconut Grove is in TX) or a warmblood. Or put her under saddle and sell her as an event prospect.

Nope, she's not sound. One start at 3 and one start at 4. I'm done with warmbloods, you can't sell them either unless you spend gobs of money on training.

Anyone else want to humor me on stallion selection? I totally realize what this mare is / does. There's no argument there. While Artax was a wonderful racehorse he's only got 2% stakes winners while standing in NY, a state with a good restricted stake program.

I'm after state breeders money so I'm looking for a stallion to match up with this mare and have the resulting foal with some ability. I looked at Sir Ivor mares' produce and nearly all of the good horses out of them have Northern Dancer close up. Seems a strange arrangement, a short, muscular stallion in Northern Dancer with a tall lanky broodmare sire (SI).

If you are going to breed to this mare you should go to a son of Storm Cat.

If you're looking for a statebred program, you might try Louisiana. Close enough to you in OK to be worth doing, good breeders incentives, and some decent stallions. They also have enough turf races and longer-than-7f turf races to suit this mare's background.

I really, really like this mare with Woke Up Dreamin. Had a lot of talent, impeccable female family. Storm Cat on the bottom will complement the Sir Gaylord and Crimson Saint; Holy Bull is MAGIC with Mt Livermore.

Brahms is also in Louisiana, impeccably bred, has done a good job with his mares. Ide might also fit, with the bonus that a nice Ide will sell in LA or TX.
