Mountain Spring Arena TB Sale in PA

Does anyone ever attend this sale or know anything about it? From the website, it looks pretty rinky-dink, but they do have a professional catalog on line.

Is that a sale where transporters are there to organize shipments on site? Or is it more like a livestock auction where you'd better have your trailer handy?

Is it a sale where kill buyers would be the most prominent bidders, or do a lot of sound racehorses change hands there?

I've been to every one of these sales. The catalog for the upcoming Oct. 26 sale is the weakest one yet. But you will be able to find transportation home for your horse without bringing your own trailer. I never noticed any kill buyers, most of the buyers attending are owners, trainers and breeders from Pa. In May, the market for broodmares and yearlings was dead - some horses didn't even bring a bid. There was a market for broke and galloping 2-year-olds, even ones that didn't have much pedigree. The arena in which these horses are sold isn't much to speak of, but they do have a nice free refreshment stand and restroom facilities. There have been some bargains sold at this sale in the past - in May, 2007, a filly named Coastal Solace was sold for $2,000, and she's now stakes-placed and has earned over $120,000. So you may find a diamond in the rough. But like I said, this is a very poor catalog. You might want to wait for the spring sale.

Final bid was $8,600. Bought by a man from Reading; will be going to Penn National to be trained by Elisha Rathman. That was a very nice horse.

She was RNA, and I believe she didn't bring a bid.

Have the results been published anywhere? I am interested in a number of hips that sold/RNA'd

No, the results haven't been published yet. Usually Thoroughbred Times publishes them about a month after the sale - they're pretty slow about sending them out. I sat through the whole sale and marked my catalog, that's the only reason I know. If you PM me with the Hip Nos, I can tell you the prices. I don't know all the buyers, though.

How was the sale generally? Were there buyers in attendance, or was it a day of no bids and RNAs?

Well, it seemed there were a ton of RNAs and no bids on broodmares, open mares, and non-Pa.breds, but the 2-year-olds and horses of racing age sold fairly decently. Some of the yearlings/weanlings sold for okay prices, but overall it didn't seem like there were as many buyers as in May.
