Breaking/Training Costs For 2YO Sales

Postby Patuxet » Fri Feb 27, 2009 9:27 am

On average what does it cost to break and train a September sales yearling and offer it at a March 2YO's in training sale? Is there a basic rule of thumb mark-up figure that people use?

Thanks!

http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/ ... pinhookers

The Blood-Horse uses a figure of $18,000 which I think is pretty accurate for one of the pinhookers doing it for their own account.

If you're looking at sending a yearling to a 2yo consignor to prepare and sell it I could see your costs being more like $22,000.

Then of course from the selling price you need to deduct 5% commission for the sales company and 5% commission for your consignor.

So if you bought a September yearling for $50,000 I figure you need to sell it for $80,000 at a March 2yo sale just to break even. $80,000 minus $4,000 sale company minus $4,000 consignor = $72,000 which is your initial $50,000 cost plus $22,000 in expenses.

It depends on the trainer or training facility you select to prepared the yearling. Most trainers charge in the range of $45-80 range. However there are some that charge even more. This rate excludes the medical bills, exams, and horseshoeing. Besides that you need to pay an entry fee for the sale, the cost per day at the sales facility is around a $100/day and you need to pay the 5% commission of the sale. There might be other fees at the sale from the consignor such as for advertisement board on the stall, and the halter with the name plate.

If you are giving the horse to the agent to break and train, like BC3 or instance, your costs are going to cover to a large measure the majority of horses that don't make it to the sale. So be prepared.

I kept track of everything last year... From Keeneland September to Barretts March, we had $16,125 in expenses before comissions.

You find out quick that you don't play this game in "SHORT PANTS"...This is why their are few people stay in the horse game! The costs are prohibitive if you have to pay everyone.
