This all seems to be under wraps. Does anyone know how it happened? Accidental, or otherwise?

When breaks get hot it can cause a "grease" fire to the axel. As per DOT regulations all commercial haulers, including the smallest of pick up pulling a trailer are required to carry a fire extinguisher. I know someone this happened to when their breaks lock up and they were very lucky they had the proper equipment and averted disaster.

happened to us shipping a mare from Ocala to Gulfstream in 1993 or 1994,we jumped the mare off the van (damn ramp would not open)with her goat, over ditch!..I still have pictures of the mare and goat on the side of hiway with the firemen and the truck on fire.It was a small commercial shipper with 6 horses van.the mare was re-shipped to Ocala, put on another truck and got to Gulfstream a few hours before the race(they objected to the scratch...),she left her tail in the gate(don't ask me how?..),left 10-15 lenghts behind then catched up and she leaded to the 1/2 and finished last...I still have that mare retired,in the field...She already was a rescue as a yearling...this mare should write a book!!...she had quite a life and travelled the world...
