prices seemed very high the first day. I saw horses that I expected to not meet the $1000 bid with zero black type selling for $5-7K. I sold in the wrong years, apparently!!

I think it is a supply-demand kind of thing. Last year this sale had about 130 more horses than this year. I think people went to keeneland and came out empty handed. Demand for the decent horses has been outrageous and prices reflect it. I don't think so much that you SOLD in the wrong year as you BRED in the wrong year. There are many fewer stallions at stud and mares being bred than 5+ years ago. The foal crops are diminishing at fairly significant rates. The alarming trend from that is that just a FEW stallions and stallion lines are getting the LION'S share of all of the mares. This does not bode well for the future of racing or the breed in general.

I was only able to view bits and pieces by watching online, but I was absolutely drooling over 515, the Hard Spun horse Anazimandros. I thought he would sell much higher.

and then the puzzlement over
421, a Purim daughter in foal to Get Stormy, for only $1000
469, lots of European black type, but by non commercial Daaher
47, a Stormy Atlantic from a stellar family but not pregnant

Hip 47 was open and had already one blank year. 421 - no excuse I just was not in the market for a mare.. 469 - Daaher is deceptive; he's an exceptionally well bred stallion. Not commercial, as you say, but a very nice thing in a broodmare pedigree. But it has become apparent in recent years that a quality pedigree is meaningless unless it is a commercially important quality pedigree with the right connections.

The end of every sale can always go one way or the other, to the moon or down to the dumps, this one went to the moon. A horse that could have been claimed for 5K in his last start at Turfway went for 7500. Go figure.

Liked the Stormy Atlantic - worth a roll of the dice I should think. But having crapped out a few times the dice aren't rolling right for me these days...

The Stormy Atlantic would have been worth a shot to a home breeder like me, but I only have room in my world for four mares and that is what I have at this moment. The chasm between breed to sell and breed to race has gotten pretty big. For the breed to sell folks, she was a young mare who could be perceived as having fertility issues so not worth the risk. I did not see her in person - I have no idea if she was well made. Even the best stallions can throw rats...

The Stormy Atlantic mare was bred to Midnight Lute, so they thought enough of her to spend ~$15K on a breeding fee when they were planning. (yes, I know that they didn't have to pay a Stands and Nurses fee)

Hmmm... I wish I had been there. Actually, it's probably just as well. The lucky dice roll has eluded me so far also!

I was shocked at hip 491 - he was an Overanalyze colt, but blank first and second dam. He looked the part, but hard to tell from a t.v. screen, so physical must of been what sold him for $18,000.
