Hi,
Anyone going to Barrett's Jan. sale? Anything interesting there?
Thanks!

Be sure to note the ages of the sire and dam. This is a case of a yearling breeding to a yearling. There was a recent discussion on a different forum about this breeding. The consensus is that we *hope* it was a mistake. My big question is WHY WOULD BARRETT'S ACCEPT THIS COLT? It does them no favors, just makes them look bad, and I can't imagine that this horse will sell for much, if it even sells at all...

Oh hell, I totally missed that. I'm going to assume this was someone not seperating the yearlings fast enough.
You're right, I have to wonder what the people at Barretts were thinking when this one got approved.
Still, with the 2nd and 3rd dams being unraced and (not to disparage them) it being an Oregon bred, the owner would have been better off GIVING this thing away or keeping it for a stable pony.
This is just stupid
FWIW, I'll be there.
As for hip 324, Barretts January is not a select sale. Literally any TB can be sold at this sale. It's also not the first time this family was sold at Barretts. If I remember correctly, a full brother of the dam of this one sold as a two year old a couple of years ago for something like $1500 or so. He was an adorable little thing--He looked something like a child's hunter--and he was bought I think as a sporthorse. I remember him well because I looked at him, thinking that if he doesn't bring a bid I might take him home as a project but there was actually a small flurry of bids on him when he entered the ring. I guess everyone else thought the same thing.

Well, good. Hopefully that little colt will end up going home with a good-hearted soul like yourself. I am drawn to runts and orphans, and I'd hate to hear about him falling into the hands of one of the bottom-feeders that gravitate towards the cheap and unsold horses at these auctions.
As for horses that interest me for a different reason, I'm curious about Hips 151 and 263. Any thoughts on what those two might go for?

263 will be on the cheap. $10k or less. General Meeting is still pretty cold. The mare only placed at 2 and never hit the board in 3 starts at 3. The mare has two half sibs who both won so she's the weak branch. You have to go back to technically the 3rd dam to find black type and thats only because the 3rd dam is a sister to a black type mare who produced a black type. I'd pass entirely.
151 should get to $25k, maybe even $30k. Lost Soldier is selling well and the family is pretty solid. First foal from an unraced dam and all but two of the sibs who started were winners -- half of those were stakes horses. Hard to ignore that. Funny thing, the second dam -- Littlebitapleasure -- only had one other sister -- Miracle Cure. Everything she (Miracle Cure) produced won as well so even if they aren't stakes horses, the 2nd 3rd dams are getting decent runners and there's every reason to believe this one will be and get runners as well. I wouldn't be surprised to see someone try to flip her in the 2yo-i-t sale next year for a healthy sum. Pinhookers dream mare this one.
If there is one thing I have learned after several years going to the sales, is conformation and size will out sell a poor pedigree and a badly conformed horse with a great page will not sell well at all.
Sire power, conformation and size are what buyers are looking for.
Sam there is really no way to tell how either of the horses mentioned will sell for until they are inspected.

I completely agree. At the October sale, a General Meeting colt out of an unraced half sister to a minor SP winner went for $80,000 but a full sister to Chief Planner RNA'd at $47,000. Looking at the page alone, you'd never predict that.
Here are a few tips I look for in buying a mare and have done pretty good so far with my mares.....all have produce winners. Mind you I did not get all these qualities in my mares....for the prices I am willing to spend. I may have to forfeit one or more of these qualites. Usually just one.
This is what I look for when looking at a catalog or pedigree.
1) How old is the mare ? I personally like them young. Does she have many females in the family that will hopefully help improve the pedigree?
2) Is she by a leading broodmare sire or a possible upcomming leading broodmare sire ?
3 Was she an above average runner. Did she win at two or at least came in 1st, 2nd or 3rd in her first few starts, showing she had talent ? I usually buy mares who haven't produced yet...so they are young. Buying claiming mares who were very talented SW or SPW's , but because of injuries or whatever have dropped in class therefore I can claim them really cheap.
4) Must have black type under first two dams or I automatically pass.
Stay away from cheap black type...not all black type is created equal. A stakes at Turf Paradise isn't the same as a Stakes at Del Mar, Santa Anita or even Bay Meadows or Golden Gate.
5) Is the mare a quality producer ? A mare who is considered a bad luck mare I pass on....dead foals, barron, aborted, more than one of these I stay away from.
6) Consistant quality earners throughout pedigree...SSI of 2.00 or more in several of the siblings in each generation in pedigree. APR will tell you this info.
7) Is the mare in foal on an early enough cover to a leading sire...so I can resell the foal and make a profit !
8 When buying a mare if you are a market breeder always look at her page...then picture the page as it would look if you were selling her foal. It takes on a whole new look when the 2nd dam who looked so good on her page now is the 3rd dam and doesn't look so good.
Of course this all I look for from just the page...then you have conformation, temperment, bad habits, health and other things to consider.
